This weekend a "SAVE THE VENICE LIFEGUARD TOWER" petition started being share on Twitter and Facebook. Here is what the petition says:

"Without notice to the Venice community, LA County lifeguards, ocean ecologists or beachgoers, the LA County Department of Beaches and Harbors plans to demolish the iconic Venice Lifeguard Tower and leave our beach with the surrounding nondescript eyesore single story building.

The Tower provides a phenomenal and unmatched expansive view of the entire Santa Monica Bay. If destroyed, it could never be replaced. It has been the pride of our lifeguards for the past 50 years. The County has disregarded the Tower's unique outstanding qualities, its history, the scarcity of public buildings in Venice and has failed to consider alternative uses.

We are asking for the opportunity to evaluate repurposing the Tower for use as a public venue such as a Lifeguard Oceans Museum. Private not-for-profit funds are available.

Repurposing the Lifeguard Tower as a community asset would create an exceptional cultural, environmental and educational venue for everyone, young and old, residents and visitors, to enjoy.

Initiative of: Adjacent neighbors, LA County lifeguards, Venice Oceanarium, Dept of Historic Resources, and Venice Neighborhood Council Preserving Public Places Committee."

No other information about this is avalaible. The petition closes with this statement:

THIS IS NOT A REQUEST FOR FUNDS - DO NOT MAKE DONATIONS

Which is good. Due to one of the above mentioned organizations having a current board member who was previously caught stealing donated funds of over $9,000. So please be careful of any donatations you make to causes like this.

In October 2022, The Ocean Cleanup deployed the USA's first Interceptor in Ballona Creek, LA County. Here’s a look behind the scenes at how this deployment was brought to life as crew members, municipal leaders, and partners share their reactions.

See how Interceptor 007 came to be stationed in California and hear first-hand the hopes of residents for how The Ocean Cleanup’s intervention can improve their environment.

The Ocean Cleanup's Interceptor 007 is up and running in Ballona Creek. Facing the first major rain event of its deployment, Interceptor 007 successfully extracted plastic and other debris to full capacity - all waste that would otherwise be heading for the Pacific Ocean right now.

The Ocean Cleanup will continue to optimize Interceptor 007 during its pilot project over the next two storm seasons. The first steps deal with minor leakage and catch management issues to increase efficiency and keep even more plastic out of the Pacific.

The fate of the Venice Surf-A-Thon is now unknown.

Contest founder & organizer, Ger-I Lewis, made two announcements this morning via his social media accounts. Both announcements statimng he has decided not to produce the contest anymore, and the second announcement was the same as the first but he added in a sentence about gifting the contest to "the Venice neighborhood" , which he called aa "a strong and responsible group".

This news comes just 12 days after Ger-I had announced the 2022 Venice Surf-A-Thon date.

His full announcement:

"Family, friends and supporters of Venice Surf-A-Thon Surf Contest, I have decided to not to produce the Venice Surf-A-Thon Surf Contest any longer. Thank you for the support and a wonderful 28 years of fun and surfing! I decided to gift the contest to the Venice neighborhood and a strong and responsible group that is considering keeping the 'Thon going into the next 3 decades.
Sincerely, Ger-I"

Is the Venice Surfing Association the group Gert-I is talking about?

And does that mean the 2022 contest is still on?
