An impressive $52K was raised at the 12th Skate the Coast event, hosted by Boarding for Breast Cancer. 160 people turned up to skate, bike or roll 19 miles from Santa Monica pier to Dive ‘n’ Surf in Rendondo Beach. The event kicked off with a Friday night party in Arbor, Venice, and the journey took place Saturday morning.

This past weekend, over 160 people attended Boarding for Breast Cancer’s (B4BC), 12th Annual Skate the Coast event raising over $52K for its breast cancer education, prevention and survivorship programs. The event encourages attendees to skate, bike, or roll 19 miles along the Southern California Coast, starting in Santa Monica and ending with a festival at Dive N’ Surf in Redondo Beach, Calif., while raising money for the cause.

Friday night, the Skate the Coast event kicked off with a party at Arbor Venice in Marina Del Rey and participants and friends enjoyed killer tunes by Dane Druess and enjoyed some tasty Traeger BBQ complemented with delicious organic juices provided by Suja.

Saturday morning, participants met up at the starting line at the Santa Monica Pier. This year, many new faces joined B4BC’s seasoned veterans including Shannon Dunn Downing, Carabeth Burnside and Jen O’Brian. With an array of participants from 6 months to 72 years old, the B4BC supporters cruised down the coast stopping at 3 hydration stops along the way at Marina Del Rey, Dockweiller Beach and Hermosa Beach.

Participants rested and refuelled with Suja Juices, Clif bars and snacks from Thrive market before rolling out to the next stop. Attendees crossed the finish line at Dive n Surf around 1:30 PM and celebrated the 19-mile journey with a block party in front of the store.

Participants, along with friends and family, were treated to a tasty lunch from Traeger Grills, Beyond Meat and Thrive Market as they listened to some great music from Truth Cartel and The Sendaways. Everyone shared stories of their journey and who they were riding for and the afternoon concluded with a huge raffle, awards and acknowledgements for our top fundraisers and fundraising teams.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and there is still time to donate to the Skate the Coast fund. Fundraising will be open until October 31 which can be done here: Skate The Coast Donations

It’s the summer of 1957, and there’s a new face on the California surfer scene, Kathy Kohner. Although small, she is mighty, tackling waves four times her height. But, in order to do so, she needs to get that pesky long board out from the rear window of her family’s Buick…

Looking to make some friends after years abroad, Kathy has gone to the beach with her family in search of some worthy prospects. With long board in tow, a clear choice seems to be a group of guys in search of the perfect wave…surfers. No one is fully accepted into the surfer subculture until they are given a nickname, and after proving herself in the squall, Kathy will eventually be dubbed Gidget by her buddies — a hybrid for girl and midget, due to her diminutive 5'1" stature. Over the summer, during the car rides back to Brentwood from Malibu, Kathy will go on to tell her parents about her new friends, experiences, and, of course, nickname, inspiring her father to write Gidget: The Little Girl with Big Ideas — a book that would become so popular it would eventually evolve into a book series, movie series, TV series, comic book, and documentary. While Kathy will eventually give up surfing, her legend will live on in the form of Gidget — cowabunga!
