Malibu/Decker Canyon: State Route 23 (Decker Road) was closed last night in both directions from State Route 1 (PCH) to Decker School Rd. due to a rock slide.

On December 30, 2022, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) Checkpoint from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints are to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sergeant Michael Lennig said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

From LeveyAngeles:

"Hi everyone, I am the innocent motorcyclist who was just sitting at a red light minding my own business, when out of nowhere I recorded my near death on 11/14/22, I will never again be who I was before that day, my life is now forever changed, I am a photographer who cannot take photographs, I am an active person who now can’t even stand unassisted, every year I run the LA marathon for St Judes children’shospital, now I can’t even walk to my kitchen without being in crippling pain and it taking 20 minutes and I am a motorcyclist with no motorcycle…

This “accident” has taken everything for me, except my life, and thank God for that…

I honestly did not think I was going to reach the $50,000 goal which at the time i drastically underestimated the amount of the bills it looks like I’m going to be stuck with not to mention my ongoing care… right now it appears because of the circumstances of the “accident“ I will be stuck with because sadly the party who caused this perished in the crash they caused while driving a stolen car, so I’m just stuck with all the expenses now.

But, I will recover, I will regain the use of my arm, I will be able to walk unassisted, I will go on with my life!!!!.

A stolen black Lexus driving at least double the speed limit crashed into a pick up truck, which then flipped on top of me was simply sitting at a red light, waiting to make a left turn before I was airlifted to the nearest trauma hospital as which point it was apparently very much in doubt I was going to live but I beat those odds. you can see exactly what happened in the video, but be advised it is very disturbing, even knowing that I lived (this video is very graphic so if you are sensitive, please be aware ahead of time). I ended it up with a shattered right arm and I am now the owner of a bunch of titanium I did not ever want, 9 broken ribs, an extremely damaged right foot, a collapsed, lung and a wide variety of other issues along with a lifetime of trauma. Not to mention the years and years of therapy OT, PT & mental in an attempt to try to recover as much use as I can from my arm/hand and foot & in an attempt to get back to my old self.

sadly, the driver who caused all of this perished in the accident and since the car they were driving was stolen. I am pretty much stuck with everything above and all the financial burden beyond what my insurance will pick up, unfortunately, I was transported to a hospital other than my own insurance plan so this has become a substantially larger issue now financially. I would just like to say thank you in advance for your generosity, especially in these extremely lean times, it’s hugely appreciated."

"What a great Christmas present for the Sysco Boys... Fabulous waves!"

From LeveyAngeles:

on Nov. 14, a horrific fatal accident occurred at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Kanan Dume Road.

The as-yet-unidentified driver of a stolen 2017 Lexus NX SUV blasted down Kanan towards Pacific Coast Highway at excessive speed. Upon entering the T-intersection, he did not slow down, and made no attempt to turn left or right to avoid the 30-foot-high cliff straight ahead. He hit a pickup traveling west on PCH, causing it to flip over and land on top of a motorcycle waiting at the light. The Lexus then smashed head-on into the cliff and exploded into a fireball. All of this happened in about three seconds.

The motorcyclist and the driver of the pickup survived the fiery crash, but the stolen Lexus driver did not.

Motorcyclist Stephen Levey was airlifted to Cedars-Sinai Hospital, where he remained for 11 days before being released to his home in Hollywood. He has no memory of the collision, but later learned that the fire and sheriff department personnel on the scene were doubtful he was going to make it.

Critical Red Flag conditions likely in Malibu Wed night 11/23 through Fri w/fire conditions through Sat due to Santa Ana winds & low humidity. Be prepared for potential wildfires, evacuations, power & traffic signal outages.

Critical Red Flag Conditions likely Wednesday Night through Friday, otherwise elevated conditions through Saturday. Moderate to strong Santa Ana Winds expected Wednesday through Friday, strongest Thanksgiving Thursday. Elevated surf and rip current risk at times through Saturday, with minor beach flooding possible. Strong change in weather expected next week, with growing chances for multiple storms. Be prepared for potential wildfires, evacuations, power and traffic signal outages and hazardous road conditions.

Peak winds expected Tuesday Night through Wednesday. Be careful or avoid anything that could spark a wildfire. Secure loose objects. Plan now for power outages. Folks near wildland interfaces, review your evacuation plans in case a fire breaks out. Stay safe all.

The National Weather Service issues Red Flag Warnings & Fire Weather Watches to alert fire departments of the onset, or possible onset, of critical weather and dry conditions that could lead to rapid or dramatic increases in wildfire activity.

A Red Flag Warning is issued for weather events which may result in extreme fire behavior that will occur within 24 hours. A Fire Weather Watch is issued when weather conditions could exist in the next 12-72 hours. A Red Flag Warning is the highest alert. During these times extreme caution is urged by all residents, because a simple spark can cause a major wildfire. A Fire Weather Watch is one level below a warning, but fire danger is still high.

The type of weather patterns that can cause a watch or warning include low relative humidity, strong winds, dry fuels, the possibility of dry lightning strikes, or any combination of the above.

During heightened fire danger, CAL FIRE will place additional firefighters on duty, staff more fire engines and keep more equipment on 24 hours a day to be able to respond to any new fires. CAL FIRE urges Californians to be extremely cautious, especially during periods of high fire danger. It's important all residents and visitors take steps to prevent wildfires. One less spark could mean one less wildfire. See below for tips on preventing wildfires.

The Malibu Library Speaker Series presents shark attack survivor Paul de Gelder at Malibu Library on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at 7 pm. Registration is required. Register online or call Malibu Library at 310.456.6438.

An elite Australian Navy diver who lost two limbs in a horrific shark attack that changed his life, Paul de Gelder now inspires others to overcome obstacles and champions shark conservation. He has been a long-time co-host on the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week. Triumphing over tragedy by relying on the mantra that he learned as a young paratrooper in the Australian Army, “Improvise…Adapt…Overcome,” Paul has enthralled and motivated audiences around the world.

In his earlier days, de Gelder chased adventure wherever he could find it. In 2000, he joined the military, rising to the elite echelons of the Australian Defence Forces as an Army paratrooper and Navy bomb disposal diver. But in February 2009, trouble hunted him down in the form of a giant bull shark. Attacked while diving for the Navy in Sydney Harbor, he was pulled out of the water barely alive. He lost an arm and a leg and embarked on an extraordinary journey of healing, rehabilitation, and renewal. He later told his story and shared the life-changing lessons gained from his experience in his inspiring autobiography, No Time for Fear .

In the years since the shark attack, de Gelder's life has changed in every aspect. After leaving the navy, he has traveled the world as a top motivational speaker, passionate environmentalist, adventurer, and mentor to school kids. Sharing an adventurous life journey where he “faced pretty much the worst that life can throw at me, and survived and thrived,” de Gelder enthralls, captivates, and leaves audiences motivated to overcome any challenge.
