Surflies reports:

With days getting noticeably shorter and the Autumnal Equinox just a few moon phases away, the summer of 2019 is in its last act. For many, Labor Day Weekend is the season’s final curtain call.

Friday sees S swell top out with waist-stomach high waves at good exposures while best breaks hit shoulder high. The modest to fun-zone S swell will be trending down Saturday as local NW windswell picks up a touch. Average summer and combo breaks are in the waist-stomach high range, while standouts pull in a few chest-shoulder high peaks. Size is down a notch and holding Sunday into Monday. Windswell energy may trend up on Labor Day as westerly SW and steep new S swells move in. Winds are generally lightest in the mornings but don’t look too bad for the afternoons Sunday and Monday.
A two-alarm brush fire erupted in Malibu Friday morning.

The Sweetwater Fire, which according to CBS2 and NBC4 , it was first reported at about 11:30 a.m. , even though several people on Instagram (like surfer Donny Wilson) posted videos and photos of the fire about a half hour earlier than that.

It's in the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Sweetwater Canyon Road, and quickly scorched five acres, but appears to be creeping uphill, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or evacuations. No homes were threatened. As of noon, the weather was cooperating with firefighters.

“The conditions are actually quite favorable…with the winds right now they don’t seem to be making too much of an impact on this fire so everything seems to be under control,” L.A. County Fire Inspector Sky Cornell told CBS2.

Cornell estimated that crews would be able to keep the fire under 25 acres.

There were four water-dropping helicopters assisting ground crews in the firefight, Cornell said. Fixed-wing tankers were also brought in to dump fire retardant on the flames. At least 200 firefighters were on the scene, not including the air operations.

Forecasters had warned of elevated fire danger throughout the weekend due to hot and dry conditions exacerbated by gusty afternoon winds. Sunday is expected to be the warmest day.

As of 1:16pm, the L.A. County Fire Department is reporting "40 acres with 20% containment and forward progress stopped. Releasing aircraft (Fixed-Wing Air Tankers)."

Here's some info from the Venice Institute of Contemporary Art about their upcoming event:

The Venice Institute of Contemporary Art and Venice Heritage Museum present ‘A History of Venice’, a People/Place/Art/Word/Sound Exhibition opening September 3 at Beyond Baroque in Venice, CA, and continuing through September 30. The lobby and mezzanine galleries will showcase installations that highlight the diverse and influential histories of Venice through the lens of its inhabitants -- from the indigenous Tongva population, to Abbot Kinney and his wild fantasy come true to create a playground for the Los Angeles elite, to the artists, activists, and renegades who have made their home in Venice and their mark over generations. The displays, interpreted by a diverse array of guest curators, honor a sampling of the many groups that have contributed to the cultural depth of this immensely influential beachside community. In particular, the exhibition seeks to center the Venetians whose influence may be known to insiders but whose legacies are at risk of being forgotten during this time of rapid cultural change.

An accompanying suite of special live evenings of storytelling, media, and performance will kick off on September 5th with a night of behind-the-scenes storytelling about Venice’s complex and fascinating history, told by local residents themselves as well as devoted historians. On September 14th, the official Opening Reception for the exhibition will be held from 2-6 pm. Following, an evening talk will feature Tosh Berman sharing excerpts from his new book about his father , influential Venice artist, Wallace Berman, and readings of works by Venice scribes such as one-time resident, Ray Bradbury , and beloved poet, Wanda Coleman, with other special guests to be announced.

A film night will take place on September 19th, which will feature rare archives from the gritty surf and skate culture of Dogtown’s second generation in the 1980s. Films by the youth of Venice Arts will be shown, as well as a selection from noted archivist, Tom Sewell, among other shorts. The final gathering on September 29th will open with an indigenous ceremony and blessing to provide good luck and wishes for the continued cultural evolution of the city of Venice and its residents. The evening will conclude with a variety show in the evening, featuring performances by the many wonderful and talented characters of Venice, both past and present (...who knows, Abbot Kinney himself might appear!). All in all, the program promises to be a moving and entertaining, not-to-be-missed celebration of the cultural legacies of Venice, a city so many lay claim to and yet still defies definition.

“Venice was... (and still is) a last stop-off at the edge of America ...oceans and outlaws. Its setting is a perfect balance for poetry. Beauty and danger. Agony and rapture.” -Philomene Long

Public viewing hours: Friday 4:00-10:00 pm, Saturday 3:00-10:00 pm, Sunday 2:00-7:00 pm. Exhibition on view from September 3rd-30th.

From Stan Ross of RingFinders.com

"Scott called me the day after he lost his white gold wedding band in the surf near the Pier in Venice Beach, CA. He always takes his wedding band off his finger and keeps it inside the upper inside pocket of his wetsuit. It was almost too warm to wear a wet suit and he was hot as he came out of the water. In waist deep water he dropped the upper part of his wetsuit. Scott knew right away that his ring went into the water.

He was up able to meet me the next morning which didn’t seem like much of a problem for me. It was directly in front of the lifeguard tower, he knew for sure that’s where the loss occurred and I would be able to search at low tide.

In began my grid search lower into to surf working my way up to the best possible location. Boom!! Scott’s ring in the scoop. Perfect directions and great timing to get there within the first 24 hours. Scott was at work, not able to pick it up. He had me give it to his friend that teaches surfing there at Venice Beach Pier."

"I started this hobby in 1971. I have kept up with the latest technology and have the state of the art metal detecting equipment. Each search is unique and has its own challenges. Timing is so important please call ASAP day or night. I will also offer you some suggestions to help you find your lost item. It's so rewarding to see how happy people are when I find a piece of jewelry that they thought was lost forever. I am retired and this is a service not a business. I'm looking forward to help you find your lost valuable."

Tropical Storm Ivo will bring SE swell to the California coast Sunday through Tuesday. The swell will peak Sunday morning through Monday morning. The surf height will range between 3 to 6 feet over south facing beaches, but could be slightly higher across Los Angeles County. There will be some dangerous rip currents, potential for coastal flooding around high tide, strong surges, etc.

Surflies reports:

While not all that impressive on satellite imagery, TS Ivo remains on a great track and we still expect fun-size surf in SoCal later this weekend. Ivo appears to be slowly weakening now and expected to weaken further over the weekend. As we have mentioned in our last couple updates, the track to the NNW is about as good as it gets for SoCal swell production even though Ivo isn’t a strong or large tropical cyclone.

Gradually weakening as it tracks to the NNW and should weaken further this weekend, likely down to a remnant low Sunday afternoon or Monday.
Maximum sustained wind of 55 knots.
Watches/Warnings/Threats: None at this time.

Dont miss Dogtown Rumble, the last one was 2 years ago! Once again Odd Squad Car Club is hosting their beach front car show taking place in the Venice Beach parking lot. Lots of cool cars and trucks show up at each show, and being at the beach, many are surf rides. IT's held in the Venice Blvd parking lot at Venice Beach.

If the cops decide to shut it down, it will turn into a Rebel Run up to Netptune's Net.

Check out one of the previous shows here DogTown Rumble 6 Coverage .

Surflies reports:

Tropical Storm Ivo continues to gradually strengthen and is currently expected to produce fun to possibly medium-size surf for Southern California and Northern Baja. The official forecast from the National Hurricane Center indicates that Ivo will strengthen to a hurricane later today just as it slows down and takes on a very favorable track for SoCal swell production.

Ivo is currently strengthening as it tracks to the west. The tropical cyclone is expected to slow considerably and take a NNW track late today and Friday as it peaks in intensity.
Strength: Maximum sustained wind of 55 knots.
Location/Movement: Roughly 550 miles SSW of Cabo tracking west (270 degrees) at 10 knots.
Watches/Warnings/Threats: None at this time.
