Beach Water Use Advisory: Advisory for all Los Angeles County beaches extended until Thursday, March 19 at 10:00 a.m.

Because of the recent rainfall, Los Angeles County Health Officer, Muntu Davis, MD, MPH, is cautioning residents who are planning to visit Los Angeles County beaches to avoid swimming, surfing, and playing in ocean waters around discharging storm drains, creeks, and rivers. Bacteria, chemicals, debris, trash, and other public health hazards from city streets and mountain areas are likely to contaminate ocean waters at and around these outlets after a rainfall. Individuals who enter the water in these areas could become ill.

Discharging storm drains, creeks, and rivers only comprise a small portion of the beach; therefore, anybody who wants to go to other areas at the beach can still enjoy their beach outing.

Areas of the beach apart from discharging storm drains, creeks, and rivers are exempted from this advisory. This advisory will be in effect until at least Monday, March 16 at 10:00 a.m. This advisory may be extended depending on further rainfall.

Recorded information on beach conditions is available 24 hours a day on the County's beach closure hotline: 1-800- 525-5662. Information is also available online at: PublicHealth.LACounty.gov/Beach

Springtime in California typically brings out the diversity of the region’s weather and surf. This week lives up to that, with a blend of south swell and northwest swell. The combo makes for peaky shape at beachbreaks -- but local winds will play a major factor in wave quality.

Southerly windswell and modest WNW swell Wed, long-period S swell Wed-Fri

Long period S swell (195-175) is on the rise all day, peaking overnight into Thursday. The Southerly windswell that picked up today will peak tonight then drops quickly through the morning as modest WNW swell lingers, the added swell energy likely enough to keep the beachbreaks in play. The most size in the morning will be reserved for long period S swell focal points (southernmost Ventura through western North LA, OC, and northernmost SD) and spots that pull in the combo of swells, where surf is in the waist-shoulder high range for the most part, lully sets to head high at select OC spots. Long-period magnets (of mainly OC) are overhead by the afternoon/evening. Light/variable flow in the morning trends light onshore from the S/SW through the early afternoon.

Come join Project Save Our Surf for a fun afternoon of mimosas and music all while cleaning the beach. Food, buckets and gloves will also be provided for the clean up. Come connect with others in Los Angeles working to support our environment. Every 2nd Saturday of the month rain or shine!

O'Neill is running the 2nd Annual Wave Of The Winter Regional Edition Contest. It's a regional video submission contest, and the Southern West Coast is one of the five regions. If you want to enter, here's the press release:

O’Neill Wave of the Winter: Regional Edition

The Wave of the Winter will be undoubtedly ridden on Oahu’s North Shore this season. Mostly because Pipe, Backdoor and Off-the-Wall are the heaviest waves on earth and the people pulling into those barrels are the best surfers on the planet.

But here’s the thing: 99% of the surfing universe doesn’t have access to that hallowed stretch of reef. 99% of the surfing universe does 99% of its surfing at home. And “home” in the United States at least, includes all kinds of different surf, all winter long. From frigid teepees in New Jersey to tapered pointbreaks in Santa Barbara; from shallow reefs in Puerto Rico to unrelenting XXL a-frames in San Francisco — and everything and everywhere in between.

And every surf community in the world huddles on sand dunes or in parking lots and talks in hushed tones about the Wave of the Day or the Wave of the Season. It means everything to the locals you see every day. (If only because it means you’ve moved a little higher in the pecking order and thus get more waves.)

Welcome to the Wave of the Winter for the people, created to celebrate unsung local heroes who charge at beaches around the country, all winter long. Surfline’s Regional O’Neill Wave of the Winter contests will be judged via online user voting after the four-month holding period. (December 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020.)

And because this will be judged by you, here’s the criteria our official North Shore judges use to use as a framework:
– Wave Size (25%) –
– Degree of Difficulty of Maneuvers (25%) –
– Style (25%) – and
– Overall “Heaviness” Factor (25%) –

There are five regions:
East Coast North: Maine to Delaware
East Coast South: Virginia to Florida
West Coast North: Point Conception to Oregon border
West Coast South: Point Conception to Mexico border
Puerto Rico/Caribbean Islands

Winners receive:
$1,000, a bunch of O’Neill gear and internet fame. (And hopefully more waves.)

How to upload:
YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, Instagram videos are all accepted.
Go to THIS PAGE to upload your ride.
*Keep in mind there’s no limit to uploads, but you’re trying to win this thing.
Head dips won’t count.

Team USA surfers Caroline Marks and Kolohe Andino and two-time US Open champion and junior national coach Brett Simpson met with Lakers fans, signed autographs and were introduced center court today, in a special Toyota presentation recognizing surfing’s Olympic debut.

These Californians plus Hawaiians Carissa Moore and John John Florence are headed to Tokyo for surfing’s first Olympics in just five months. To celebrate surfing's first Olympic Games, each team member received a custom Lakers jersey from the Lakers and Toyota.

Team USA’s Golden State surfers and coach were stoked to watch the legendary Lakers players, three of whom have won gold medals at the Olympics – LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Dwight Howard.

USA Surfing’s junior national coach and two-time U.S. Open champion Brett Simpson is an avid Lakers fan. “What a special opportunity! I’m so stoked to stand with America’s best surfers and be introduced during the famed Lakers organization’s home game,” Simpson said. “We get to watch one of the best ever - Lebron James, who has earned two gold medals!”

“The United States fielded an absolute dream team of surfers. I am so proud of these word class athletes and excited about what they will bring to surfing’s first Olympics,” said USA Surfing CEO Greg Cruse. “It will be fun for the team to interact with the Lakers’ hometown crowd in a city that will host the 2028 Olympics, where surfing is expected to be a major highlight of the Games.”

USA Surfing is grateful to partner with Toyota to raise the sport’s visibility and help the athletes prepare for success. “We’re excited to present Team USA’s first Olympic surf team,” said Dedra DeLilli, group manager, Olympic and Paralympic marketing, Toyota Motor North America. “In just a few short months, this exceptionally talented group of athletes will make history as surfing debuts at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and we’re honored to partner with USA Surfing as we support them on their journey to the Games.”

Team USA surfers are gold medal contenders with formidable talent. Moore is the current world No. 1 and has four world titles to her name. Florence is a two-time world champion. Marks is ranked No. 2 in the world at just 18 years old. Andino is ranked No. 5 in the world and has an acrobatic style made for Japan’s waves.

“I’m super honored to represent my country and share it with my family and friends,” Marks said. “I’m excited for surfing’s fan base to expand and bring more attention to the WSL and to the sport.”

“I am so happy and could not be more excited to compete in Tokyo,” Andino said. "I love my country and I always love watching the Olympics, so it will be really rad to march in the Opening Ceremony and to be a part of everything.”

Cruse said an Olympic gold medal will represent a pinnacle of achievement for surf athletes with more national and worldwide attention than surfing has ever known.

“Carissa, Caroline, Kolohe and John will be the pioneers in surfing’s Olympic movement. I’m looking forward to having them experience all the exposure, resources, history and inspiration of the world’s biggest sporting stage,” Cruse said.

USA Surfing became the national governing body for surfing in the Olympics in 2017 and is creating a high-performance path to the Olympic stage and cultivating the next generations of talent.
