PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT: 17 million gallons of raw sewage were spilled into the Santa Monica Bay on July 11-12. Currently Dockweiler State Beach and El Segundo Beach are closed to the public. The City of Los Angeles and LA County Department of Public Health are testing beaches and water in the Santa Monica Bay.

This is a developing story from Heal The Bay and we will update information as new details come to light.

When did the spill occur? The sewage spill started at 7 pm on 7/11/2021 and stopped at about 5 am on 7/12/2021. We are told by City of LA’s Bureau of Sanitation that the spill was stopped early this morning at around 5 am and all sewage is now being treated normally.

How much was spilled? We understand 17 million gallons of raw sewage were spilled through the 1-mile outfall, which is directly offshore from the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant in El Segundo.

Which beaches are impacted? Currently Dockweiler State Beach and El Segundo Beach are closed to the public. The City of Los Angeles and LA County Department of Public Health are testing beaches and water in the Santa Monica Bay.

What should the public do to protect themselves? We recommend the public stay out of the water until further notice. Also, check the Beach Report Card for the latest ocean water quality alerts in California, and review the River Report Card for water quality information about freshwater swimming holes in Los Angeles County.

What issues does this cause to people and to ocean wildlife? Bacteria and viruses in raw sewage are extremely dangerous to people and can carry a variety of diseases. Debris such as tampons and plastic trash, when released into the Bay, can harbor bacteria and can cause entanglement of wildlife, but it seems in this case those debris were successfully filtered out of the spill before it made it to the Bay.

Why did this happen? We understand the inflow to the Hyperion plant in El Segundo was severely clogged and flooded the facility. The sewage left the facility untreated through the 1-mile pipe and outfall.

"Los Angeles is completely open, no more restrictions. Everybody enjoyed Machine Gun Kelly’s and Travis Barkers Free concert on the rooftop in Venice Beach, California. Hundreds of spectators enjoyed the great music and the fun in the sun. It was incredible to see so many people dancing and having fun."

"Today, I went to Malibu. Going on the Pacific Coast Highway, passing Nobu and Dukes restaurants, till I hit Malibu Country Mart. There was a classic car show called Malibu Cars & Coffee. Kots of exotic cars. Afterwords, I went to the private beach at the colony to show you where the celebrities live. It was an awesome day."

"Today I heard that there was a big gray whale stuck on Dockweiler State Beach. He was still alive, but since the tide was so low he could not swim back into the ocean. They had to wait until high tide. I was there for a few hours, but then the sun went down, so I really do not know what happened to the whale. Hopefully he could find his way out back into the ocean."

Shortly before 4PM on Wednesday, Lifeguards responded to a report of a 25’ whale inside of the surfline just south of Marina Del Rey at Dockweiler beach. The whale was reportedly alive at this time.

At 6:25:44 PM, the LACoFD Lifeguards reported via social media that they are waiting for tides to rise in hopes it will help the whale reach deeper water. Adding that any attempt to tow it may result in a critical injury.

At 7PM, Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn reported via social media that the whale has passed away. She added that experts at the scene reported the whale was two years old and very sick.

The Lifeguards and Beach officials will work together to coordinate removal of the animal.

The Natural History Museum of L.A. County will be out tomorrow to do a necropsy. Then they will determine whether they bury him or tow him out to sea.

The LA Fire Dept has released a statement on Wenesday morning's fire on the Venice Boardwalk that started in a hmeless encampments and spread to the vacant building.

"116 LAFD firefighters took 2 hrs 17 min in largely defensive firefighting operations to extinguish active flame in a 68 year-old, two-story, 6,952 square-foot commercial structure that was vacant when an outside fire at a homeless encampment on the south side of the building extended into the structure - and briefly threatened, but was prevented from damaging 2 nearby structures. Any contents within the heavily damaged and now unstable fire building have yet to be identified. No injuries reported. LAFD Investigators are now at scene of what is considered an active investigation."

6 aerial ladder trucks were used to fight this Greater Alarm Fire" (a term which means a fire with more than 6 but less than 16 fire companies assigned to fight it).

Reports from witnesses say that the roof of the building collapsed.

Several sources have stated that the nearby "fire hydrants on Ocean Front Walk were dry" and "had been turned off to prevent tampering".

In this season of sorrow and discontent Venice Surf-A-Thon was/is a bright spot of liberty, celebration, surfing, fellowship and competition!

With a cloud of uncertainty but plenty of strong support and sponsorship, we went forth and folks we did it! We put the 27th Annual Venice Surf-A-Thon Surf contest in the books!
