THIS SATURDAY
HISTORIC "BAY STREET BEACH"
SANTA MONICA
MELINATED SURF CIRCLE

SWIM. HAVE FUN. CONNECT. DIALOGUE

We are gathering community for a day of purpose. Back in the day this was a segregated stretch of beach were black people could enjoy aquatic culture with the least racial harassment and physical confrontation. In community, The Inkwell was renamed THE BAY STREET BEACH because "Inkwell" was a derrogatory term racist whites used to denigrate areas where black people gathered.

This Saturday...this Saturday we are pay homage and reconnect with those before us who paved the way to create our soulful history of aquatic culture. We are also celebrating those who today continue that legacy. The ocean is freedom and that freedom is for all of us.

So showing up in unity is the best form of resistance...it is a revolutionary act.

Showing up in numbers and being seen by each other is healing and affirming and joyful. We welcome you to join us at The Bay Street Beach. Paid parking is available at this spot. Light refreshments and hydration will be available. Bring everything that brings you comfort for the day...umbrellas, sun hats, sunscreen, your favorite eats. We will be there until sunset. That will be a beautiful hour to close a beautiful day!

Feel free to bring folk and repost!
Blessings

The man arrested is 26 year old Jacob Matthew Vanderburg.

We also found out some of the things he did before the police arrived. He was mouthing off to the lifeguard in Tower 28 and attempted to walk up on the tower. He had also took someone's boogy board and was bashing it into the sand.

As seen in the video we shot, he was heading back towards the lifeguard tower when the police approached him.

And here's some additional info from Patch.com:

He was arrested on suspicion of possession of a loaded firearm and possession of illegal high capacity magazine. Lt. Joseph Cortez of the SMPD told Patch.com that he apparently had a firearm holstered on his hip and police received information that he was possibly brandishing the gun.

"When speaking with the subject, officers became concerned about his mental health," Cortez said. "The officer placed the man on a mental evaluation hold, pursuant to 5150 WIC."

Here's our original story we posted about this:

On Thursday, at 12:15PM, beach-goers near Tower 28 in Ocean Park spotted a man with what appeared to be a handgun in his belt.

The Santa Monica Police were called and showed up to apprehended him.

He was walking towards Lifeguard Tower 28 when the cops approached him. "I didn't do anything...let me go." and "I'm gettin' outta this town, I don't like these fuckin' liberals." are among some of the things he yelled to the police as they drew their guns on him and instructed him to get down.

He was placed in cuffs fairly quickly, while yelling, "Blue lives matter!" among other ramblings.

He shouted "You better get back to work and stop protesting in the street..you understand me!" to all the on-lookers who were watching him and his fancy hat being escorted off the sand to the police vehicles parked in the lot.

While getting placed in the police vehicle, he gets heckled by the dude from the nearby surf school to which he responds by threatening to come back and kill him.

The guy's VW car was parked on Bernard Way in front of Ocean View Park. It had Ohio Army Veteran plates on it, and inside the car was several large knives and a small axe. During the police search of the vehicle, they also found a sleeping bag in the back seat, and in the truck was clothing, food, a laptop, pots & pans, and more household items.

No word on this from the SMPD yet, but according to the surf school dude's heckling, the man will be spending the next 5 years having anal sex.

According to Surfline, "South-southwest swell and northwest windswell combo maintains small, but rideable surf, for many spots along the West Coast. Light wind and generally clean conditions are expected for the morning hours. ."

Saturday, July 25th: 1-2′ surf at summer/combo breaks, occ. AM wind is light.
Small scale mix of SSW swell and NW windswell for waves at or under knee high at average breaks. Light/variable wind early, before trending from the S/SW through the later morning, then becoming light+ to locally more (4-8kts) out of the W for the afternoon in most areas.

Sunday, July 26th: 1-2′ waves off small SSW/SSE swell mix and a little NW swell, top summer/combo breaks, occ. 3′ sets. Light winds for the morning.
A small blend of SSW and SSE Southern Hemi swells moves in as a little NW windswell lingers. Most spots see weak surf down in the 1-2′ zone, while best summertime exposures/combo breaks hit waist high on sets. Light winds for most of the morning, shift to light+/locally moderate onshores over the afternoon.

The dead body that was discovered at Venice Breakwater on Tuesday morning has been identified.

Authorities got the call just before 6:00AM.

The naked body was a 48 year old homeless woman named Miriam Montufar.

A pair of shoes, some clothing, and other items were found in a pile near the body.

Sheriff's deputies are still investigating the death.

The one-year-old skating facility has been vandalized for the second time this month, in the same way as before.

A black substance that feels and smells like motor oil was strategically poured all over the ramps and quarter-pipes, such that it hinders a smooth ride up or down.

This time, some sand was also added to the oil, and dumped elsewhere in the skating area. There is a sandbox adjacent to the skatepark.

This latest incident seems to have happened sometimes around the weekend of July 18-19. Some of the oil is still damp.

The park was struck in a similar fashion last July 4 weekend - though with less oil and no sand.
