Coastal Cleanup Day

Nearly 12 million people will be participating in the world’s biggest volunteer effort to protect the ocean, Saturday, Sept. 16 from 10 AM – 1 PM. Mark your calendars and join millions of others around the world to take a stand against plastic pollution. This year, Surfrider West LA / Malibu is taking Coastal Cleanup Day to our elected officials here in LA County to demand action on the scourge of polystyrene and expanded polystyrene (AKA Styrofoam) waste polluting our oceans, beaches, and waves.

Join Surfrider West LA / Malibu as they collect & assemble kits full of polluted polystyrene foam to send to LA County Board of Supervisors and members of the LA City Council. They’ve been talking about adopting bans on polystyrene for years and it’s time for them to take action. Play your part, share this post, bring your friends and participate in the largest global environmental volunteer effort for our beaches.

Liam Red Taylor Paddleout

Several hundred people showed up to the Venice Pier on Saturday for a memorial paddleout in honor of beloved local surfer Liam Alexander Taylor. Known to most as Red, the always smiling 19 year old red head passed away on the 18th from a surfing accident. The entire surf and skate community of Dogtown was in attendance, as well as family and friends from Cambria, Ca, where Red also resided.

We put together a photo gallery of photos from the Paddleout, as well as the Pier Jumps, & Surf Session that followed.

A Memorial Skate Session For Red was held later in the afternoon over at the Venice Skatepark (video coming).

Surfrider Turns 33 Today

Today Surfrider turns 33. What started as a group of surfers that joined together over 30 years ago to protect Malibu, CA from overdevelopment and pollution, has grown into one of the most powerful coastal protection groups in the world.

Surfrider is now a nationwide network of more than 140+ chapters and youth clubs that protect 5,656 miles of coastline. We are coastal defenders who are fighting more than 100 active campaigns on a daily basis for our coasts. And we’ve won 434 coastal victories (and counting) since 2006.
