SMPD Arrests Armed Kidnapping Suspect

On May 17, 2026, at approximately 12:14 a.m., Santa Monica Police Department officers responded to the Vons located at 1311 Wilshire Boulevard regarding a reported kidnapping involving an adult victim.

The preliminary investigation indicates Jorge Luis Vega, 32, of Los Angeles, and the victim were known to one another and had been in a dating relationship. This does not appear to be a random incident.

During the incident, Vega allegedly approached the victim in the parking lot and left the area with her in a vehicle. Vega also allegedly threatened a witness who attempted to intervene.

SMPD officers and detectives immediately began efforts to locate the victim and suspect. Later that day, the adult victim was located in the City of Beaumont. She was no longer with Vega and was contacted by law enforcement.

On May 18, 2026, at approximately 3:15 a.m., SMPD personnel located Vega in Los Angeles. Vega fled in a vehicle, and a pursuit ensued. The pursuit ended in the 900 block of West 85th Street in Los Angeles, where an officer involved shooting occurred.

Vega was taken into custody at the scene. No officers were injured, and no gunshot injuries were reported. The victim was not present during the pursuit or officerinvolved shooting.

Vega is currently in custody and was booked on suspicion of:

Kidnapping

Criminal Threats

Brandishing a Firearm

Rape

Felon in Possession of a Firearm

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. SMPD is coordinating with the appropriate investigative agencies and will provide additional information as it becomes available.

SMPD is not releasing the victim’s identity due to the nature of the investigation.

Metro Bus Fatal Runs Over Pedestrian - Possible Suicide

The Santa Monica Police Department is investigating a fatal traffic collision involving a pedestrian and a Metro bus that occurred Friday afternoon at Main Street and Ocean Park Boulevard.

On May 15, 2026, at approximately 2:00 p.m., SMPD officers and Santa Monica Fire Department personnel responded to the area of Main Street and Ocean Park Boulevard regarding a collision involving a pedestrian and a Metro bus. The pedestrian, an adult female, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Investigators located security video from a nearby business, which provided a clearer view of the circumstances leading up to the collision. Preliminary investigation indicates the Metro bus was stopped when the pedestrian moved underneath the bus. As the bus pulled away from the stop, the pedestrian was struck and sustained fatal injuries.

The Metro bus operator remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. At this stage of the investigation, there is no indication of impairment or distraction on the part of the operator.

A Big Blue Bus vehicle that arrived at the stop moments after the incident was temporarily held for documentation and released as soon as practical.

Main Street was closed between Ocean Park Boulevard and Hollister Avenue during the investigation. Traffic on westbound Ocean Park Boulevard toward Main Street was also impacted.

This remains an active investigation.

Tragic Scooter Accident-Venice Beach Beloved Richard Pinard

On Easter morning, my Dad Richard Pinard "Grandpa" was tragically hit by a car while riding his scooter in the bike lane at Washington and Sanborn, by Venice Beach boardwalk and passed away 4 days later. Losing him has been incredibly devastating for me and his family, and I still can't believe the reality of his absence. He was healthy, living his best beach life in Marina Del Rey at the age of 92, yes, still riding an e-scooter. People were amazed at how he looked in his 60's and was so strong and healthily for his age. He was my life, my world. Richard was a loving father who raised me from the age of 7. He was a devoted grandpa to my 3 kids, and a cherished member of the Venice Beach community. Everyone who knew him, loved him! My Dad will be dearly missed and I will never be the same now that he is gone. He would of lived to be 100 as he always told us and he definitely could have, no doubt at all.

My Dad did not have any life insurance, and I am planning his funeral arrangements with limited funds. So many kind Venice/Marina Del Rey residents and others have reached out to express their condolences and offered to donate to my Dad's funeral expenses. I created this GoFundMe to give everyone a way to support Richard, and I am deeply grateful for any contribution, no matter the size, will make a meaningful difference in his honor. Richard A. Pinard will be laid to rest at the Roosevelt Memorial Park Cemetery in Gardena, California. Thank you for your support! Santa Monica Launches Automated Bike Lane Enforcement

The City of Santa Monica is launching Automated Bike Lane Enforcement to improve bike lane safety. Keeping bike lanes clear of illegally stopped vehicles is essential to protecting people of all ages who bike, scoot, and roll throughout Santa Monica. This effort supports the City’s broader commitment to safe, sustainable, and accessible multimodal transportation options for residents and visitors alike.

Vehicles stopped or parked illegally in bike lanes create serious safety risks, forcing bicyclists into active traffic lanes and increasing the likelihood of collisions. In May 2024, Santa Monica piloted automated bike lane enforcement technology on two parking enforcement vehicles and identified nearly 1,700 violations in just six weeks—highlighting the scale and urgency of the issue.

The Automated Bike Lane Enforcement technology uses advanced, forward-facing camera systems mounted on City Parking Enforcement vehicles to automatically detect parking violations in bike lanes. When a vehicle is identified blocking a bike lane, an evidence package is generated and reviewed by a Parking Enforcement officer before a citation is issued.

What Drivers Need to Know:

Warning Period

Starting May 1, 2026, registered vehicle owners of vehicles stopped or parked illegally in bike lanes in Santa Monica will receive warning notices in the mail.

Automated Enforcement Begins

A $93 citation will be issued to violators starting July 1, 2026. Payment plans are available to individuals with low income.

Santa Monica's Open Streets Festival Returns

The City of Santa Monica anounnanced the return of COAST Open Streets Festival, July 19 – a free, all-ages, car-free, pedestrian-focused culmination of Santa Monica’s World Cup activations featuring art installations, cultural programming, interactive experiences and food vendors. COAST will link key destinations along and near Ocean Avenue, including the Santa Monica Pier, Tongva Park, Palisades Park, Arizona Avenue, Third Street Promenade and the Fourth Street Metro E Line terminus.

From 2016 - 2019, Community Arts Resources (CARS) produced COAST, the City of Santa Monica's Open Streets Event, transforming the streets of Santa Monica into a giant park for a day.

For two miles COAST brought the streets of Santa Monica to life with arts and cultural programming and installations, community outreach by city departments, engaging and active workshops, as well as small business outreach.

COAST was Southern California's most pedestrian-centered open streets event, with more than 80% of participants walking the route. With over 50,000 locals and visitors in attendance each time along parts of Ocean Avenue, Colorado Avenue and Main Street.

Until the pandemic, this project was the City of Santa Monica's signature event, inviting the local community and visitors from across greater Los Angeles to experience car-free streets in Santa Monica every fall. The event included live music and performances, curated art installations, interactive workshops, food, and more! CARS produced COAST in collaboration with the City of Santa Monica's Cultural Affairs Division, the Office of Sustainability and the Environment, and Transportation Planning Division.

Pali Strong Foundation Founder Dead From Suicide

Photo via Youtube

Larry Vein, the founder of the controversial Pali Strong Foundation ended his life on April 27. He was 60 years old and the father of a baby boy.

Many have said Vein was energetic voice for Pacific Palisades residents.

Vein and the Pali Strong Foundation had come under fire when his Pali Strong Foundation recieved $500,000 of Fire Aid money. Money from the benefit concert that was advertised would go directly to victims of the California wildfires.

Pali Strong Foundation is basically an Instagram account and a website where Vein would post about the Palisade recovery. Because the Instagram has only 1k followers and very little interaction on posts, and the site is rarely visited, many were upset that Vein took the money.

When the backlash started, back in October 2025, Vein turned off all comments on his Instagram posts. He made a post explaining that he would use the $500,000 to make an app and more complete information website to be a hub for the Palisades Recovery. He mentioned "every voice matters", but kept all comments turned off.

Palisades residents and community leaders have questioned how this large sum was allocated to a newly formed group to operate an "online hub" for information rather than direct, tangible relief for the 13,000 homes destroyed across Los Angeles County. Some have alleged that he was not an active participant in community programs prior to receiving the funds.

Vein's statement claimed that Pali Strong operating under Community Partners, which is a used a "fiscal sponsor". This is a way to fast track the process of becoming a non-profit.

Vein said Community Partners encouraged him to apply for the Fire Aid Grant. Community Partners typically takes a 9% cut of grant money to provide nonprofit status and administrative support.

Pali Strong Foundation should not be confused with Pali Strong 2025

Pali Strong 2025 is students from Palisades High School who started an Instagram account and a GoFundMe to raise money to rebuild their school. They started using the Pali Strong name on January 7, 2025. Vein did not start using it until February.

Vein started by making Youtube videos on a channel he created called PacificPalisadesFire, with his first video on January 9th. He changed the channel's name to Pali Strong™️ (filmed by resident Larry Vein) in mid February, the same time he started the Instagram account.

Shacked Mag has most likely brought a lot more news about the fire and rebuild, and all other types of local news to the community, If anyone cares to donated to our fund, see below:

Mayor Bass Holds a Torch Next To Palisades Flag for Photo with Trump

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger met with the president on Wednesday to discuss wildfire recovery. Bass brought gifts for Trump: a Pacific Palisades flag and a torch from LA's 1984 Summer Olympics.

When they did photo-ops for Trumps social media, Bass is there holding the torch, next to the Palisades flag that Trump is holding.

is a stupid idea. As many people as both have on their teams, no one there thought the image of a torch next to the Palisades flag would be a stupid idea.

The Malibu Library Speaker Series presents skateboarding legend Rodney Mullen at Malibu City Hall on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at 7 pm.

Rodney Mullen is often referred to as the Godfather of Modern Street Skating. He invented most of the tricks in today’s skateboarding and is considered the most dominant champion in the history of the sport. He has been in the public eye since his teenage years, featured in films, documentaries, TV, video games, and print media. His drive and creativity have also translated to success in business, applied science, and technology.

Rodney is a Fellow at MIT's prestigious Media Lab and was appointed by the Smithsonian as a Distinguished Research Scholar. He serves as a scientific advisor to the C4 Foundation for active-duty Navy SEALs and as a collaborator in the Department of Complex Pain & Addictions Services at Vancouver General Hospital. He has co-written papers and contributed to studies on optimizing human performance, neuroscience, resilience, and creativity for the National Academy of Sciences.

Rodney co-founded a large and lucrative skateboard company that he sold in 2001. Under that umbrella, he launched multiple brands with other pro skaters, helping them transition their skills from athletes to business, many of whom dominate the industry today. He holds two patents and is widely credited with modern board and wheel designs.

After selling his business, Rodney found Linux Open-Source computing to be a blend of skate culture and engineering where he naturally connected concepts that led him to the TED stage. Since 2013, he’s presented at companies like IBM and Apple, and at multiple Data and DevOps conferences. Rodney co-founded an augmented reality company in 2018, which has partnerships with Niantic and Apple and has been nominated for multiple awards.

Santa Monica Non-Profit Official & Wife Found Dead In Possible Murder-Suicide

Jeremy Ferguson, who was director of operations for Downtown Santa Monica Inc., and his wife, Mandy Zelinka, were found with fatal gunshot wounds in a possibble murder suicide at their home in Venice.

LAPD officer found the couple in their home on the 600 block of Superba Avenue at about 10:50 a.m. on April 21 following reports of a suicide at the location. Officer found both had been killed by gunshot wounds.

Ferguson, 50, had sent his suicide note to a friend who raced to the home near Venice Boulevard and called police when no one answered.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Ferguson’s wife, 49-year-old Mandy Zelinka, died from a gunshot wound to the head on April 21, 2026, inside the residence.

“Our hearts are broken as we process the news of the passing of Jeremy Ferguson,” said DTSM CEO Debbie Lee. “Jeremy was a cherished member of our team and a true champion for Downtown Santa Monica. His passion for placemaking and the dedication he brought to his work each day made a lasting impact. He will be deeply missed.”

Ferguson also served on the board of the Santa Monica History Museum.

Santa Monica Police Department Launches SMART Center

The Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) has officially launched its Santa Monica Analytical Real-Time Center (SMART Center), marking a significant advancement in how the City prevents, responds to, and investigates crime. The SMART Center serves as a centralized operations hub where technology, personnel, and real-time intelligence converge to support coordinated, proactive policing.

The SMART Center integrates multiple public safety technologies into a single operational platform, including the City’s camera network, Live 911, Drone as a First Responder operations, and advanced video analytics. This integration allows personnel to monitor incidents as they unfold, provide real-time intelligence to officers in the field, and support faster, more informed decision-making during critical incidents.

“This is a significant step forward in how we deliver public safety,” said Chief Darrick Jacob. “The SMART Center allows us to operate with greater precision, coordinate in real time, and proactively address crime trends while maintaining our commitment to transparency and accountability.”

“Safe streets are the foundation of Santa Monica’s comeback,” said Caroline Torosis, Mayor of Santa Monica. “The new businesses opening, the visitors returning, the investment flowing back into our corridors, all of it depends on people feeling safe here. The SMART Center gives our officers the real-time tools and information they need to deliver on that promise, and that is great news for every resident, every business owner, and every family in this city.”

A key function of the SMART Center is strengthening the Department’s ability to address Organized Retail Theft (ORT), a regional and statewide issue impacting Santa Monica’s commercial districts. By integrating live video and regional information-sharing systems, the SMART Center enhances SMPD’s ability to identify patterns, track repeat offenders, and coordinate with partner agencies to disrupt organized theft networks that operate across jurisdictional boundaries.

Unlike traditional systems that rely on after-the-fact investigation, the SMART Center is designed to support both real-time response and proactive enforcement. During active incidents, SMART personnel can synthesize information from multiple sources, coordinate aerial support through drone deployment, and provide officers with a clear operational picture to improve both effectiveness and safety.

Even prior to the completion of the physical center, SMPD utilized SMART Center capabilities in the field to support investigations, monitor incidents in progress, and coordinate deployments. With the center now fully operational, these tools are unified in a single environment, allowing for greater efficiency and consistency in how information is applied.

The SMART Center also enhances regional collaboration. By improving information sharing with local and state partners, SMPD is better positioned to address crime trends—particularly Organized Retail Theft—that extend beyond city limits and require coordinated, multi-agency response.

“I congratulate the Santa Monica Police Department for continually working to evolve the practice of policing to better serve our community,” said Nathan J. Hochman, Los Angeles County District Attorney. “Real-time crime intelligence centers are becoming the gold standard in policing and public safety nationwide. This cutting-edge technology helps our already highly trained officers have more robust evidence-collection which leads to greater crime prevention and, most importantly, fewer victims. At the District Attorney’s Office, this technology helps the prosecution to gather stronger evidence for our cases as we seek justice for victims. We appreciate the continued partnership with law enforcement as we work to take down retail thieves and other organized crime rings across Los Angeles County.”

Funding for the SMART Center was secured through a competitive grant from the California Board of State and Community Corrections as part of the Organized Retail Theft Prevention Grant Program, through which SMPD was awarded $6.125 million. This investment reflects the State’s recognition of technology-driven, intelligence-led policing as a critical component in addressing retail theft and other complex crime challenges.

The SMART Center directly supports SMPD’s four operational priorities: crime suppression, homelessness response, traffic safety, and community engagement. For the community, this translates to faster emergency response, more precise deployments, and improved coordination during large-scale or rapidly evolving incidents.

The launch of the SMART Center represents more than a new facility—it reflects a shift in how SMPD delivers public safety. By combining technology, personnel, and real-time intelligence, the Department is advancing a more coordinated, proactive approach focused on prevention, accountability, and community trust.
