The following incident was originaaly posted to Nextdoor by one of the victims:

"I rarely post because it is depressing to see the fear and crime in our area. However, this is a safety issue for all.

This morning whilst waking my dog, I called in a dead man on Washington. I stayed until the fire department arrived and proceed on my walk. I was walking on the beach toward the Marina when a woman approached me indicating I needed to turn around and follow her. I did. She said that a man had beaten a woman with a cane and he was following them. He started walking faster toward us. We decided to move to the sand and run up to Speedway. We all started running. He ran up to me and my dog, hit me on the hip, knee and my head, started screaming “I will kill you then rape you”. My dog lunged at him aggressively and he pulled away. At that moment two AMAZING men tackled him, took his cane and we proceeded to run to safety. He followed us on the sand while we were on Speedway.

This was COMPLETELY unprovoked. Not one of us said a thing with this man. I made eye contact only as he hit me in the head.

Long story short. He was apprehended, we made a positive ID filed a report and we all will Prosecute!!

Yes, it was a crazy homeless man having a psychotic break down; however, we need to fight back!! I left the house without my taser and Bear Spray for the first time.. thinking ….. “ohhh I just going to the Marina, I’ll be fine”. Don’t do that!!!

Pay attention to your surroundings….had I not listened to the young lady that advised me to turn around and follow her, I would have been alone with that man on the beach.

I have been here since the 80’s and have seen some crazy things. Never have I been afraid…. I’m terrified at what this state has become. I even made my post private as a result.

Be safe..

This is a picture of him with three positive id’s"

First update on the Attempted Murder at the Ocean Park Library comes from the Santa Monica Police Department:

"At approximately 12:35 p.m., detectives investigating the incident spotted a person of interest who was loitering in the front of the library. Upon contact with the suspect, he became uncooperative and threatening in his behavior. Additional responding officers deployed a taser after the subject attempted to assault uniformed officers.

The suspect, who is homeless, was booked for attempted murder, felony battery on a police officer, giving false name to a police officer, and resisting arrest.

In custody: Nathanael Roger Lavoie DOB: 04/15/83"

Second update: users on Twitter (or X , whatever it's called now) have looked up the suspect's info, and the following is according to sources via Twitter(X, Y Z whatever):

Nathanael is from West Warwick, Rhode Island. Up until this year, was was trying to be an actor and screenwriter. He beleives he is "God's Gift" because he was named Nathanael.

He talks about why he came to Santa Monica is this video he posted 7 months ago:

Around January, he started posting odd rants like this to his social media accounts:

"My parents murdered from greed. I am a Warner. Owner and CEO of Warner brothers. Truth will be out soon. Shit people do for money blows my mind. Well this kid is done eating scraps, about to wrap the truth around their neck"

His last rant being this one:

"I am not going to say I told you so or whatever because that’s called pride. My story came out true because God is the one that told me through time I am Oliver, Joshua Warner, the heir of Warner Bros.. I’m heading down to the FBI right now in Los Angeles downtown, what an amazing journey because with God he doesn’t mess around he’s a teacher and he is wonderful and he is so real and he is coming soon and he is not happy so if anybody of my friends have great ideas and feel like you want to invest in something come up with an idea and get in touch with me. I’ll always be a phone call away. I’m not gonna be a bougie ass motherfucker, like these asshole celebrities and keep everything private. I’m putting it out there because I’m helping everybody because I basically own everything and you’ll see me on TV in a few days maybe a week or two I don’t know everything is so overwhelming and God is good. I am shutting down my Facebook because that’s the old me, I’ll be setting up a new one under my original name, Oliver Warner, and if you wanna be my friend on there, I’ll except because love carries all hatred stirs up strife, and that will end your life. I love you all, so stand tall because everything happens for a reason just know that I have a good one guys."

From Santa Monica Close Up:

"In a noteworthy incident, Santa Monica Police Detectives and Forensic Specialists converged on the Santa Monica Public Library located on Main Street on Wednesday, August 9, 2023. This response was initiated following a "Check the Status" call at around 8:09 a.m., prompting patrol officers to assess the situation at the library premises.

The library surroundings bore witness to a crime scene that had been promptly cordoned off with distinctive yellow crime scene investigation tape. This demarcation illustrated the meticulous approach adopted by authorities to maintain the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

Upon arrival, officers were met with a distressing discovery: an injured 41-year-old homeless male at the library's front doors. Exhibiting evidence of blunt force trauma to his face and a swollen forehead, the victim's condition necessitated swift medical intervention. Paramedics transported him to a nearby medical facility, where he presently remains in critical condition, although signs of eventual recovery are encouraging.

Subsequent investigation efforts yielded notable results. Around 12:35 p.m., sharp-eyed detectives identified a person of interest, noted for loitering near the library's entrance. However, engagement with this individual quickly escalated into a confrontation. In response to non-cooperative and threatening behavior, responding officers resorted to employing a taser to subdue the suspect, later identified as Nathanael Roger Lavoie, aged 40.

Lavoie's apprehension unveiled a series of serious charges against him, including attempted murder, felony battery on a police officer, providing false identification, and resisting arrest. His homelessness contributes an added layer of complexity to the unfolding investigation.

In the aftermath of these developments, the Santa Monica Police Department enlisted the assistance of the Santa Monica Fire Department. Their task: to restore the library premises to their original state, thereby ensuring the community's return to a sense of normalcy following the unsettling incident.

Authorities extend an appeal to the public for any pertinent information about the incident or the suspect. To aid ongoing efforts, individuals can reach out to the SMPD Investigations Division during business hours at (310) 458-8451, or alternatively contact the Watch Commander 24/7 at (310) 458-8427.

As the investigation progresses, Santa Monica remains steadfast in its commitment to uncovering the truth behind the events that transpired on that significant August morning."
