Malibu Surfing Association's honored to display artifacts from the history of their club at Surfing Heritage & Culture Center's "Surf Club" exhibit, opening on March 11, 2017, 6-9 PM.

Very special thank you to Eric Gross for leading the charge in designing the display and unearthing so many amazing relics that show the abundant history of our beloved cobblestone point break. "A history of surf clubs, starting with the Hui Nalu and the Outrigger Canoe Clubs right up through the present day and featuring members from the Coalition of Surfing Clubs. Each participating club has been given a 5' x 8' space to show their history and decorate as they see fit. Visitors to SHACC will be asked to vote on their favorite display and a winner will be announced at the end of the exhibit in June!"

Last year, alongside the Committee for Equity in Women’s Surfing and the Coastal Protection Network, the Surfrider Foundation lobbied the California Coastal Commission to require organizers of the Titans of Mavericks Surf Contest to include women in the competition. The exclusion of female athletes in years past represented a shady violation of the Coastal Act which enshrines public access for all Californians, from the Smith River to the Tijuana Sloughs. In November of 2016, the Coastal Commission granted the contest organizers the required permits under the condition that female athletes would be welcome to participate. This year will mark the first year that Titans of Mavericks will host a Women’s heat.

Join the Surfrider Foundation and co-host Keala Kennelly at the Bungalow Santa Monica for a benefit screening of IT AIN’T PRETTY, a new documentary that celebrates female surfers on a mission to break the big wave ceiling, followed by a Q&A panel with local female big wave chargers! Yeoww! Event is free and a portion of all food and drink proceeds will go to the Surfrider Foundation West LA / Malibu .

After 25 years of offering a free service, James O’Mahoney is closing his Santa Barbara Surfing Museum, located on Helena Avenue in the heart of Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone. O’Mahoney said its next-door neighbor, the Santa Barbara Museum — which he also owns — will remain open.

The decision to pull the plug on the surf museum came shortly after investor Ray Mahboob bought the building late last year. With the high-end Entrada hotel about to open its doors at the bottom of State Street this summer, Funk Zone real estate values are going stratospheric.

“You have to turn the other cheek, I know,” said O’Mahoney, “but I’ve run out of cheek,” adding, “plus I need to get a new hip.” In the meantime, O’Mahoney says he’s looking for someone interested in buying his collection of 60 vintage surfboards, hundreds of skateboards, and about as many ukuleles.

Santa Barbara Surfing Museum

When: Noon-5 p.m. Sunday. LAST DAY OPEN

Where: 16 1/2 Helena Ave. #C, Santa Barbara.

Admission: Free.

Years in the making, and just like that, it was here. #WarholSurf was something to celebrate, and celebrate everyone did at what has become the de facto home of culture in Southern California - Venice Beach. The Rose Room hosted over 200 celebrities, surf industry A-listers, media, friends and special guests for a night of libations and amazing live music from Roya, Sextile, and Tracy Bryant with DJ sets from Aquarium Drunkard and Reverberation Radio.

LA-based party photographer, and all around good guy, CobraSnake was behind the camera and was on the spot when things got wild. The #WarholSurf art exhibition combined with the insane music set the tone for a night that no one wanted to see end. A taco truck outside for whenever anyone needed fresh air kept everyone's appetite at ease. And the House Beer, Bacoo Rum, Coa Tequila, Deep Eddy Vodka, Class Wines and Nuro Water made sure everyone's beverage needs were met (and then some).
But, of course, all good things must come to an end. Around 12:30am, the crowd slowly dispersed, people went their separate ways and all attendees definitely had a deeper appreciation, if not obsession, for Warhol and his timeless contributions to pop culture and the art world as a whole.
