"In a concerning sighting today, Wednesday, June 21, 2023, a sea lion displaying signs of illness was spotted along the Santa Monica shoreline, raising concerns among residents and authorities. This incident comes amidst a recent surge in the number of sick sea lions reported by Animal Control."

SMPD Press Release:

On June 20, 2023, at about 9:30 am, a lone suspect walked into the Wells Fargo Bank in Santa Monica located at 120 Broadway and used a demand note to rob the bank of approximately $1,100. The suspect fled the area on a bicycle. A description of the suspect and direction of travel were broadcasted to police officers and a short time later the suspect was located in the 2000 block of Ocean Front Walk.

The suspect, who was still in possession of the stolen money, was positively identified by witnesses and arrested for robbery.

IN CUSTODY: Franzino, Jordan Thomas DOB: 12-26-1994

Franzino, who is homeless, is from out of state.

The arrest occurred on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, and has sparked intense interest in the community.

During the apprehension, the suspect, accompanied by a loyal canine companion, saw their beloved pet being taken into custody by Santa Monica Animal Control Officers. Acting in accordance with well-established protocols, the officers swiftly impounded the dog, ensuring its safety and well-being during this evolving situation. The custody of the canine follows the standard procedures implemented by Santa Monica Animal Control to safeguard the animal's welfare in such circumstances.

The circumstances surrounding the arrest and the alleged connection to the downtown heist have yet to be fully disclosed."

Vandals smashed out the glass of two lifeguard towers in Will Rogers Beach that were recently painted to celebrate Pride month.

Lifeguard officials say they discovered the damage on Monday moring. Nothing of significance was taken from inside and repairs on both towers have already begun. In the meantime, both towers are still operable.

A police report was filed it is unclear if the vandalism is being investigated as a hate crime.

Pico Youth & Family Center (PYFC) is a community-based nonprofit organization founded in 1999. PYFC provides an array of evidence-based educational services to empower underserved youth from Santa Monica's Pico Neighborhood and the Greater Los Angeles Area. With the help of highly-committed and caring staff, PYFC serves hundreds of youth and young adults ages 13 to 24 at its Youth Center (across from Santa Monica High School) and through community-based programs on a year-round basis.
