From Santa Monica Close Up:

"Hundreds of hotel workers, including cashiers, cooks, servers, bartenders, and hospitality workers from UNITE HERE Local 11, initiated a three-day strike on Sunday, July 2, 2023. The protest took place simultaneously at various hotels in Santa Monica, starting in the early hours of the Fourth of July holiday weekend at 6 am. The hotels targeted by the strikers were Hampton Inn & Suites, Courtyard by Marriott Santa Monica, Viceroy Santa Monica, Le Meridian Hotel, and Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows. However, certain neighbors who advocate for Freedom of Speech voiced their dissatisfaction with the early morning timing, deeming it a disruption of tranquility and a potential violation of the noise ordinance. In response, Santa Monica Police Officers were summoned to oversee the unfolding events."

A 3.8 magnitude earthquake hit the coast of Southern California on Sunday morning near Malibu.

The earthquake happened at around 2:29 a.m. local time in the Pacific Ocean, about 12 miles from Malibu and about 36 miles from Ventura, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

“The earthquake was too small to trigger the delivery of Shake Alert-powered alerts to cell phones,” USGS ShakeAlert said on Twitter. “We know some of you felt shaking and we hope you took a protective action like Drop, Cover, and Hold On.”

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 18.5 miles. There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

"In this documentary short about the evolution of the 'Venice Beach' Memorial skate park, I avoid a generic gentrified point of view with my duties as an experienced filmmaker and local. My aim in this 'close to my heart' subject, was to share an authentically genuine account of how things were, developed and put into motion in a very condensed positive way.

As I plan and organize legit funding for the publishing of a full length book, I leave you with this actual, factual account in the now. The written will detail many more aspects, history and views. In honor of our radical forefathers, last of tribe, legends and new generation pioneers. Keep Venice True Blue!" - Bart Saric
