It’s the summer of 1957, and there’s a new face on the California surfer scene, Kathy Kohner. Although small, she is mighty, tackling waves four times her height. But, in order to do so, she needs to get that pesky long board out from the rear window of her family’s Buick…

Looking to make some friends after years abroad, Kathy has gone to the beach with her family in search of some worthy prospects. With long board in tow, a clear choice seems to be a group of guys in search of the perfect wave…surfers. No one is fully accepted into the surfer subculture until they are given a nickname, and after proving herself in the squall, Kathy will eventually be dubbed Gidget by her buddies — a hybrid for girl and midget, due to her diminutive 5'1" stature. Over the summer, during the car rides back to Brentwood from Malibu, Kathy will go on to tell her parents about her new friends, experiences, and, of course, nickname, inspiring her father to write Gidget: The Little Girl with Big Ideas — a book that would become so popular it would eventually evolve into a book series, movie series, TV series, comic book, and documentary. While Kathy will eventually give up surfing, her legend will live on in the form of Gidget — cowabunga!

Episode Info:
In July of 2019 I participated in The Call To The Wall longboarding event at Surfrider Beach in Malibu, California. I thought it was a proper place to get plenty of perspectives from a diverse group of longboard surfers. From the young groms to the middle aged dudes to the young women to the old fellows. I asked everyone the same question. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF COMPETITIVE PROFESSIONAL LONGBOARDING TO LOOK LIKE?

On this episode you will hear a wide array of great answers.

Gracias to my listeners and sponsors!

A two-alarm brush fire erupted in Malibu Friday morning.

The Sweetwater Fire, which according to CBS2 and NBC4 , it was first reported at about 11:30 a.m. , even though several people on Instagram (like surfer Donny Wilson) posted videos and photos of the fire about a half hour earlier than that.

It's in the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Sweetwater Canyon Road, and quickly scorched five acres, but appears to be creeping uphill, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or evacuations. No homes were threatened. As of noon, the weather was cooperating with firefighters.

“The conditions are actually quite favorable…with the winds right now they don’t seem to be making too much of an impact on this fire so everything seems to be under control,” L.A. County Fire Inspector Sky Cornell told CBS2.

Cornell estimated that crews would be able to keep the fire under 25 acres.

There were four water-dropping helicopters assisting ground crews in the firefight, Cornell said. Fixed-wing tankers were also brought in to dump fire retardant on the flames. At least 200 firefighters were on the scene, not including the air operations.

Forecasters had warned of elevated fire danger throughout the weekend due to hot and dry conditions exacerbated by gusty afternoon winds. Sunday is expected to be the warmest day.

As of 1:16pm, the L.A. County Fire Department is reporting "40 acres with 20% containment and forward progress stopped. Releasing aircraft (Fixed-Wing Air Tankers)."

Malibu's LaLanne Surf just put out this video of these two surfing Topanga.

"There are a hand full of surfers that know the feeling of the Gemini surfboard created by shaper Jeff Alexander in the mid 90's. Shaper and Malibu local Jon LaLanne started making the board 10 years ago in an effort to revive the design that Surfer magazine snubbed and never rode the board.Kelly Slater held the board for hours at the 2003 surfer poll awards. Tomo created his Vader off the Gemini and shapers like Stretch , Mickey Munoz, Dane Hantz from Vulcan and Scott Anderson were inspired by the design..." - LaLanne Surf
