Satellite observed winds of Hurricane Kay taken at 7am PDT today. Sustained winds over 50 knots (60 mph) less than 800 miles south of Los Angeles. This storm will weaken over the next few days, but gusty winds, thunderstorms, heavy rain is still on track for Southern California Fri-Mon.
While the center of Hurricane Kay will stay well offshore, gusty east winds, thunderstorms, high surf, coastal flooding will also be possible in the region.
Hurricane Kay will impact southwest California Friday through Monday, but the magnitude of those impacts is based on the still uncertain track.
Kay is a cat 1 hurricane ~340 miles S of the tip of Baja CA with max sustained winds 85 mph. It'll weaken as it moves north into colder water, but it could possibly bring notable rain to parts of SoCal and for sure some surf.
At least some pockets of rain are expected in Southern California this weekend, including the San Diego and Los Angeles areas. But it's uncertain how much rain to expect at this time.
Hurricane Kay can be seen on satellite Tuesday morning:
It’s time for the Black Surfers Collective Pan African Beach Day.
