The Santa Monica Pier Ferris Wheel will be lit “lights off” except rim, 1 hr on Saturday, March 27 in recognition of Earth Hour.
On Saturday, March 27 at 8:30 p.m. local time, Earth Hour, one of the largest global grassroots movements for the environment, will virtually bring together millions of people, businesses and leaders from around the world to raise awareness on the urgent need to address nature loss and climate change.
The iconic Pacific Wheel Ferris wheel in Los Angeles joins world-famous landmarks including Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament in London, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Great Wall of China, the Parthenon at the Acropolis in Greece, and Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong, among others at 8:30 p.m. local time on March 27. The Pacific Wheel will “go dark” except for the wheel rim safety lighting.
Born in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour has grown to become one of the world’s largest grassroots movements for the environment, inspiring individuals, communities, businesses and organizations in more than 180 countries and territories to take tangible environmental action for over a decade. Historically, Earth Hour has focused on the climate crisis, but more recently, Earth Hour has strived to also bring the pressing issue of nature loss to the fore. The aim is to create an unstoppable movement for nature, as it did when the world came together to tackle climate change. The movement recognizes the role of individuals in creating solutions to the planet’s most pressing environmental challenges and harnesses the collective power of its millions of supporters to drive change.
Earth Hour participants can visit www.earthhour.org to know what’s happening in locations around the world and read individuals’ stories about what they are doing for the planet. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has filed charges against Alexander Cogco, a 19-year-old male, for his involvement in a shooting.
On November 3, 2020 at about 11:58 p.m., Santa Monica Police officers respondedto a shooting near the intersection of Bay Street and Ocean Front Walk. Officers discovered a victim who was suffering from a gunshot wound to the face. Officers were informed that the female victim and her boyfriend were walking to their parked vehicle when they came between two groups that were engaged in a heated argument. As the couple entered their car, they heard multiple gunshots. One of the rounds fired went through the victim’s vehicle and struck the female. The parties in both groups fled the area prior to police arrival. The victim survived, however later required surgery to remove bullet fragments from around her eye area.
Santa Monica Police Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) were able to identify Cogco as the shooter of this incident. Cogco was already in custody at the Los Angeles County Men’s Central Jail on an unrelated case. On February 26, 2021 the Los Angeles County’s District Attorney’s Office charged Cogco with one count of 245(b) P.C. – Assault with a semi-automatic firearm and one count of 243(d) P.C. – battery with serious bodily injury. Cogco remains in custody pending future court proceedings.

"Ocean Avenue from Broadway to Colorado Blvd. was closed for about two hours this morning while Santa Monica Police and Firefighters, with a Department of Mental Health clinician tried to talk down a man from a tree at Palisades Park, Tuesday, February 16, 2021. The man may have been suicidal. He would not come down from the tree. After a couple of hours, the emergency personnel de-escalated the situation by leaving the area with the man still in the tree."
On Friday night, Piper Pollard, a 21-year-old Pacific Palisades resident, who police state was drunk, slammed her BMW into the outdoor dining section of Urth Caffe in the 2300 block of Main Street in Santa Monica
The drunk's BMW knocked over the k-rail "sending tables and chairs flying as diners scrambled to safety." Several diners suffered minor injuries and one had to be transported to the hospital.
According one of the diners, the k-rail tipped over landing on the leg of another diner.
Pollard was booked for felony DUI.
The Pacific Wheel will once again light up for love this Valentine’s Day weekend with a special light program that features hearts and fun emojis.
There will be gusty winds and hazardous seas across much of the coastal waters this weekend. There will likely be Gale force gusts up to 40 kt and seas over 10 feet, mainly outer waters.
Celebrating Valentine’s Day can be traced back to year 496 in ancient Rome. The celebration then was to honor Saint Valentine of Rome, and it wasn’t until the 14th and 15th centuries that the holiday was associated with romance and courtship. In 18th-century England, it grew into an occasion in which couples expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards known as “valentines”.
Walking the boardwalk of the Santa Monica Pier has been a local tradition for Angeleno couples for decades, and why wouldn’t it be? You can smell the salty ocean breeze, usually chilly on a February evening, giving a perfect chance to wrap your arms around each other. Many Pier shops sell sweet treats like decadent ice cream and freshly made funnel cakes that are perfect to share after a romantic seaside dinner. Although the iconic Ferris wheel will be closed to riders this Valentine’s Day weekend, the twinkling lights will still dazzle pier guests as they twinkle off the rolling waves.
As in years past, the Pacific Wheel will feature a special light program just for lovers full of beating red hearts, cute kissing emojis, and maybe even some fun messages that you can share with your special Valentine. Sony TV is developing TV adaptation of the 2005 skateboarding film “Lords of Dogtown” , which was an adaption of the 2001 documentary "Dogtown and Z-Boys".
Described as a one-hour drama ensemble-drama, the Lords of Dogtown TV show is "set in the 1970's skateboarding scene in southern California and centers on a hell-raising teenage girl growing up in the foster care system. She falls in with a crowd of skaters who idolize the famed Zephyr Skateboard Team."
Going off that info from the press release, seems the story will not actually be about Zephyr skaters, it will be about some random skaters.
This show is being developed and written by some lady from Georgia, named Kat Candler, because who else would Hollywood get to write a TV show about California and skateboarding than a non-skater from Georgia who says she is a Texan.
Catherine Hardwicke, who directed the original movie in 2005, will slap her name on as an executive producer for the project, and the guy who made the The Shield will also be an executive producer. As of right now, seems none of the real Dogtown or Z-boys are invovle with this. And no one has been cast for any parts yet.
Seven Adams, son of Jay Adams, appears pissed off about this and is calling for a boycott of this show. Check out this screenshot from his most recent Instagram Story:

The show is going to be for Amazon‘s free streaming service, IMDb TV. It's still in the early development stage, so there's not even a release date yet.
New Release from the City of Santa Monica about the Santa Monica Pier will now be closed on weekends till the end of January:
" Out of an abundance of caution and to contribute to regional efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19 in Los Angeles County, the Santa Monica Pier will temporarily close today, Sunday, January 10 and remaining weekends in January. The best way to slow the spread of COVID-19 is to stay home as much as possible and the closure is part of meeting this need.
The City’s Code Enforcement COVID-19 details, including Health Ambassadors brought on specifically to promote public health during COVID-19, reactive throughout Santa Monica to enforce unpermitted business operations, gatherings, and face masks. Please follow all Los Angeles County guidelines to promote community health."

New Release from the City of Santa Monica:
"In an effort to slow the rampant spread of COVID-19 throughout Los Angeles County, the Santa Monica Pier will temporarily close for the New Year’s holiday weekend. The closure will be effective at 10 p.m. on Wednesday, December 30 through 6 a.m. on Monday, January 4. The closure aligns with public health officials’ plea with members of the public to stay home as much as possible and dissuade the public from gathering in crowds.
We are in the middle of the worst part of the public health crisis with hospitals stretched beyond their capacity as people continue to gather and infect friends and family. Right now, one county resident dies of COVID-19 every ten minutes. Be part of curbing this trend by not gathering and staying home.

The iconic Santa Monica board shop secures a new lease, extensive new renovations, and will reopen in the Spring of 2021. The temporary store will remain open for business in adjacent building next door, during the renovation.
Boardriders Inc. is pleased to announce a new go-forward lease and substantial renovation of its iconic ZJ Boarding House in Santa Monica – a pillar of the local community for more than three decades.
Working closely with the building’s landlord and local leaders, a new five-year lease has been signed and major renovations are underway at the original corner location on Main Street and Ocean Park Boulevard in Santa Monica. These steps ensure ZJ’s ongoing service to the community in all things boardriding for the foreseeable future.
“What a silver lining at the end of such a challenging year,” says Todd Roberts, co-founder of ZJ. “ZJ Boarding House is such an integral part of the community and we can’t thank our customers enough for their patience and support of us over the years. Thanks to the hard work of the community, of Boardriders, and of our landlord, we now have a plan in place that will continue to make this space the ultimate destination for everyone looking to have fun in and around the ocean, the mountains and beyond.”
After the Main Street renovations, which include the replacement of the roof, seismic retrofits, and substantial interior upgrades, the entire 4,900 square foot space will be open and ready to share the stoke in just a few months’ time. “Spring 2021 can’t come soon enough,” says Ajai Datta, who leads US retail operations for Boardriders. “We’re all looking to turn the page on challenging year that will ultimately make us stronger in the long run.”
The rumors are true, ZJ Boarding House officially announced that they will reopen.
The shop closed it's doors back in August due to the landlord and Boardriders (the mega-corp that now owns ZJ) not being able to agree on the new lease. But, now it appears they were able to come to an agreement, as a new 5-year has been signed.
The doors to the newly remodeled will reopen in Spring 2021, after the buidling undergoes the much needed seismic retrofits and gets a new roof.
Until then, ZJ has set up in a "temporary" shop next door to the original location. They are open for business right now.
