Join Surfrider LA this Saturday, September 21st from 9am-12pm at the Venice Pier for International Coastal Cleanup Day. Surfrider LA will be staged on the sand just north of the pier at the end of Washington Boulevard and will need plenty of volunteers on hand to not only pick up trash but to help sort and analyze the findings. The data gathered during beach cleanups are critical in leveraging policy initiatives aimed at reducing plastic pollution at the source. They'll have everything you need so bring a friend and your reusable water bottle to fill at our drinking station! Register Here.

This 2 day event will cost just under $10,000. At 120 kids that's $83 bucks a head for the day of a lifetime. That $10K will start a fire that will NEVER go out. That's what the Mighty Under Dogs do. 💪 Please DONATE today and sponsor one.

This week's hurricane hypebeast is Hurricane Kiko, you'll start to hear about this one in all the upcoming surf forecasts for all of California. All the sites need click-bait, and what better way for surf sites to get visits than hyping up any hope of a good swell (we're guilty of it, but at least we admit it, Surflies won't).

Anyways, Kiko isn't going to bring a significant swell, it doesn't have the size and is not on the track for Socal. It will bring "rideable S to SSW" to Socal spots.

The Tony Alva Story will be featured at the Other Venice Film Festival on Oct. 5th.

The OVFF is a nonprofit community event dedicated to screening full- length features, short and animated films that embody the spirit, energy and diversity of Venice, California. Filmmakers descended on Venice for two days of film screenings, premieres, sell out crowds, spirited Q&A sessions, panel discussions, local art on display and parties with live music.

The Tony Alva Story
61-years-old Alva, the oldest professional, skateboarder in the world, is considered by many to be the godfather of modern day skateboarding. Alva’s brand of aggression and bravado in the 70’s set the stage for the way skateboarding would be forever defined.

Vans’ The Tony Alva Story chronicles T.A.’s humble beginnings on the streets of Santa Monica to his rise to superstardom as part of the legendary Z-Boys, his inevitable drug-induced implosion and his ultimate rise from the ashes to accept his rightful place as a beacon of hope and inspiration for generations of skateboarders the world over.

Also they will be showing:

Surfing has long been a key component of California culture. In 2018, the California Legislature declared surfing the official state sport and named Sept. 20 as California Surfing Day.

So this Friday is the second California Surfing Day, which means....... use the hashtag #CaliforniaSurfingDay on your Instagram and twitter posts on Friday. Because other than a big group photo and surf session all the way down in Oceanside, there is no events happening California Surfing Day. Maybe some shops will have some sales or something.

From Visit California"
"Please join Visit California in taking part in celebrating the Golden State’s famed surf culture on Sept. 20. A number of resources have been developed for businesses and destinations to help spread the word in your local communities, including social media imagery and posts, an official logo and more. Share your celebrations online using the hashtag #CaliforniaSurfingDay to show the world how the Golden State rides its waves."

Well here's the logo:

A 250-mile ocean paddle relay passed its baton through Malibu in August, involving lifeguards and junior lifeguards from more than 25 agencies. The relay ended this past weekend at El Refugio State Beach in Gaviota, after beginning at Imperial Beach, near the Mexican border, in June.

Malibu’s leg of the relay was paddled by local lifeguards including Damian Minicucci, who paddled from Surfrider to Zuma beaches. The paddle relay was held to raise awareness for the John Wayne Cancer Foundation (JWCF) “Block the Blaze” skin cancer education program, according to information shared by the California Surf Lifesaving Association (CSLA).

“As lifeguards, we spend the majority of our careers in the sun, and we know the dangers of sun exposure,” Bill Humphreys, CSLA president, said in a statement provided by the organization. “The ‘SoCal PaddleDown’ is a great way of raising awareness about the dangers of sun exposure, and the JWCF is providing the next generation of lifeguards the tools and information to prevent and detect skin cancer.”

Overlapping SW/SSW swells maintain fun-size surf for the West Coast throughout this week. Shorter period NW swell is also in the mix, with beachbreaks likely to see peaky shape off the combo of swells. Wind/conditions improving for many areas through the second half of the week, with particularly favorable conditions in the mornings.

A multivehicle crash which injured four people and shut down the southbound lanes of the Pacific Coast Highway in Pacific Palisades for several hours Tuesday morning.

The wreck involving a box truck and at least three cars occurred at 7:52 a.m. on the PCH between Chautauqua Boulevard and Temescal Canyon Road, according to the California Highway Patrol's incident log. The area is right by Will Rogers State Beach.

California Highway Patrol reported that some of the occupants may have been ejected. Aerial footage showed at least one vehicle completely destroyed.

Motorists initially were getting around the crash site by driving on the northbound shoulder, which was alternately closed for both sides so cars could pass, according to the aerial footage.

PCH at Chautauqua Boulevard was fully reopened at 1 p.m.

The lifeguards rescued this guy who was unconscious after jumping off the Venice Pier at 11:47am on Sunday, as seen in these photos shot by Six12 Media. It was also on our Instagram Story being posted as it happened.

According to several witnesses the guy "was on something".

He had passed a couple surfers on his walk to the pier, and they said he had a backpack and they noticed he was.

Two ladies who on the pier saw him sitting on the ledge of the pier, jokingly told him to be careful, that he could fall over. But they said he didn't acknowledge them, almost as if he couldn't even hear him.

A surfer who saw him jump said he kinda of jumped off with his arms flailing and he hit the water flat on his side.

The lifeguards ran out right away and rescued him. They got him to shore and onto an ambulance.

Seems like the hit knocked him out, because he was unconscious when they were bringing him in.

He looked dead to most of the people on the pier. But he did have a pulse, according to someone who later asked one of the lifeguards about it.

Come out and join Surfrider LA a in cleaning up one of our favorite beaches! After the clean-up there will be wine, music and a GREAT raffle for all participants with pieces from iSEAuMovement and Dog Beach Jewelry and bottles of delicious Rosenthal Wine and MORE!

Hurricane Juliette has formed in the East Pacific and is expected to strengthen before traveling over cooler waters far from the Hawaiian island. “Additional strengthening is anticipated for the next day or two. Weakening is forecast to begin by Thursday,” forecasters said.

And she continues to look quite impressive on satellite Monday afternoon, while taking a favorable track within the SoCal swell window.

By Saturday, the end of the current five-day forecast, Juliette is expected to be a weakening tropical storm still hundreds of miles east of the Central Pacific and more than 1,500 miles east of Hawaii, according to the hurricane center.
