California Wildlife Center’s Marine Mammal Rescue program is reporting a sudden increase in calls regarding ailing gulls. Our team has responded to seven of these birds over the last two days, all with similar signs, and has not yet determined the cause. Symptoms include lethargy and inability to walk or fly.

If you spot a sick or injured gull on the beaches of Malibu in LA County;

-keep a slight distance, far enough that the animal does not attempt to leave or show distress at your presence

-take a photo and note your nearest landmark, such as a lifeguard tower, if an address is not available

-contact Marine Mammal Rescue Team at (310) 924-7256

If you spot an animal in distress in another area, call our main line (310) 458-9453 to be directed to our most appropriate department to assist.

Remember that “calm” animals are often in critical condition, under extreme stress. Do not touch the animal unless instructed to by a rehabilitator. Do not attempt to feed or give water, as these animals may not be well enough to take items by mouth.
