An impressive $52K was raised at the 12th Skate the Coast event, hosted by Boarding for Breast Cancer. 160 people turned up to skate, bike or roll 19 miles from Santa Monica pier to Dive ‘n’ Surf in Rendondo Beach. The event kicked off with a Friday night party in Arbor, Venice, and the journey took place Saturday morning.

This past weekend, over 160 people attended Boarding for Breast Cancer’s (B4BC), 12th Annual Skate the Coast event raising over $52K for its breast cancer education, prevention and survivorship programs. The event encourages attendees to skate, bike, or roll 19 miles along the Southern California Coast, starting in Santa Monica and ending with a festival at Dive N’ Surf in Redondo Beach, Calif., while raising money for the cause.

Friday night, the Skate the Coast event kicked off with a party at Arbor Venice in Marina Del Rey and participants and friends enjoyed killer tunes by Dane Druess and enjoyed some tasty Traeger BBQ complemented with delicious organic juices provided by Suja.

Saturday morning, participants met up at the starting line at the Santa Monica Pier. This year, many new faces joined B4BC’s seasoned veterans including Shannon Dunn Downing, Carabeth Burnside and Jen O’Brian. With an array of participants from 6 months to 72 years old, the B4BC supporters cruised down the coast stopping at 3 hydration stops along the way at Marina Del Rey, Dockweiller Beach and Hermosa Beach.

Participants rested and refuelled with Suja Juices, Clif bars and snacks from Thrive market before rolling out to the next stop. Attendees crossed the finish line at Dive n Surf around 1:30 PM and celebrated the 19-mile journey with a block party in front of the store.

Participants, along with friends and family, were treated to a tasty lunch from Traeger Grills, Beyond Meat and Thrive Market as they listened to some great music from Truth Cartel and The Sendaways. Everyone shared stories of their journey and who they were riding for and the afternoon concluded with a huge raffle, awards and acknowledgements for our top fundraisers and fundraising teams.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and there is still time to donate to the Skate the Coast fund. Fundraising will be open until October 31 which can be done here: Skate The Coast Donations

The Malibu-based production company Planet Grande and the City of #Malibu invite all residents to attend a free community screening of the documentary film “Johnny Strange: Born To Fly,” Thursday, October 24, 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM at Malibu City Hall.

The 80-minute film documents Johnny Strange, who grew up in Malibu and became an international extreme sports athlete, known for mountain climbing, big wave surfing and extreme skydiving until he was tragically killed in a skydiving accident. The film was directed by Eamon Harrington and John Watkin and produced by Veronica Brady, all Malibu residents.

Johnny Strange rose to fame as the youngest person to climb the tallest mountain in each continent, including Mt. Everest when he was just 17 years old. When he discovered BASE jumping (skydiving from buildings, antennae, spans and earth) and wingsuit flying, he found his life’s true passion. Taken from hundreds of hours of Johnny’s personal video archive, and featuring intimate insights from family members, friends and Johnny himself, the film traces his journey from the world’s highest mountains to one of the world’s most dangerous sports, and the dramatic turn of events leading up to his final jump.

The screening will be followed by a question and answer session. The event is free to attend, but an RSVP is required. To RSVP or for more information, visit Born To Fly Documentary Screening or email Kriesgo@malibucity.org.

Forecast from Surflies: "North Pacific Busts Open -- South Pacific Not Done"
"Strong NW swell kicks off the second half of the month for Northern California, with SoCal getting a little energy as well"

Which means North CA is getting waves, like usual, and Socal is not, like usual.

"South Pacific Swell: SW shifting SSW swell (210-195) continues Thursday before slowly trending down on Friday. Exposed breaks in North LA will see waist high surf during that time. Those waves fade heading through the weekend, although we will be watching for new SSW swell to fill in."

"This larger SSW swell (205-190) should build in through the day on Sunday with long period forerunners, peak on Monday the 21st and then slowly back down through the middle part of the week. The storm behaved very close to model guidance over the past few days with satellite verified seas of 30-40′, although it’s less than ideal track – moving sideways in relation to SoCal, versus at us- should limit size some."
