From Brad Jacobson:

" Imagine paddling out into an empty Malibu lineup watching near perfect waves roll by unridden. IT HAPPENED THIS WEEK
Ok, there's obviously a catch... you had to be ranked as one of the best longboarders in the world. This must have been what it was like to paddle out at Malibu in the 50's.
Thanks for watching. I'm Brad Jacobson and I'll see ya on the sand."

"When you take some of the best longboarders in the world and let them surf Malibu with nobody out, some incredible rides are bound to go down. These were some of our favorites from the final day of the event. Congrats to Harrison and Soliel on your well deserved victories" - Log Rap

We reported last week that Malibu City Council approved declaring a local state of emergency to get homeless encampments removed from areas prone to wildfires. The City of Malibu has started the process:

The Malibu City Council approved declaring a local state of emergency on September 27, 2022, initiating a program for reducing the risk of wildfires associated with unpermitted and unregulated camping in City limits. The resolution enables the LA County Sheriff’s Department (LASD), LASD-Homeless Outreach Services Team (HOST) and the City to more quickly remove homeless encampments on public property during wildfire season. LASD and the City are prioritizing removing homeless encampments and unhoused people from the brush-covered hills and canyons of Malibu and placing them into emergency shelters. These efforts ensure that the people being removed are connected to a network of healthcare, mental healthcare and housing services. The potential for fires originating from cooking and warming fires in homeless encampments poses a serious threat both for residents and for people living in encampments who may become trapped during a fire. In 2021, the City adopted a similar resolution, based on hazardous fire conditions and the more than 20 brush fires attributed to homeless encampments between January and August, 2021

“Wildfire is Malibu’s number one public safety threat, and homeless encampments in the brush covered canyons and hillsides of Malibu are a recipe for disaster,” said Mayor Paul Grisanti. “The City must address the very real threat to lives and homes posed by homeless encampments during peak wildfire season, while continuing our approach to finding shelter options and homeless services for those who are moved out of encampments.”

The resolution enables the LA County Sheriff’s Department (LASD), LASD-Homeless Outreach Services Team (HOST) and the City to more quickly remove homeless encampments on public property that are identified as fire threats during wildfire season. As part of wildfire safety efforts, LASD and the City are prioritizing removing homeless encampments and unhoused people from the brush-covered hills and canyons of Malibu and placing them into emergency shelters.

These efforts ensure that the people being removed are connected to a network of healthcare, mental healthcare and housing services, not just pushed out into another community.

In 2021, the City adopted a similar resolution, based on the critically low Live Fuel Moisture content, which indicates the potential for dangerous wildfires, and to the more than 20 brush fires attributed to homeless encampments in the canyons of the City that year to date.

The resolution directs City staff to work with Malibu Homeless Outreach Team, LASD and HOST to identify homeless encampments, to conduct outreach to people living in encampments about the dangers of living unhoused in wildfire zones and about the camping prohibition; to offer available housing, shelter and services; and to ensure that Malibu remains free of homeless encampments while not criminalizing people experiencing homelessness.

City Staff was also directed to collaborate with LASD Arson Watch during Red Flag fire conditions to watch for signs of smoke and fire and alert the Fire and Sheriff’s Departments.

Malibu is a compassionate community that has been dedicating significant resources toward services and outreach for people experiencing homelessness. The situation has become extremely dangerous, both for Malibu residents and for people living in homeless encampments who may become trapped during a fire.

The Los Angeles Homeless Service Authority’s (LAHSA) annual homeless count in February showed 81 people experiencing homelessness in Malibu, a decline of 66% from 239 in 2020 and 157 in 2021. In Los Angeles County, 69,144 people were found to be experiencing homelessness, a 4.1% increase from 2020.

If you observe encampments in Malibu, contact the Public Safety Team at PublicSafety@MalibuCity.org or call 310-456-2489, ext. 236.

The 2022 Cuervo Classic Malibu Longboard Championship Presented by O'Neill, the final stop on the World Surf League (WSL) Longboard Tour, is scheduled to run on October 4 and October 5, starting at 7:35 am PDT to crown the 2022 Longboard World Champions. The competition will be held at First Point in Malibu, Calif., and is expected to have clean, two-to-four foot conditions with the swell building throughout the competition and peaking on Wednesday, October 5.

Malibu’s First Point is one of the crown jewels of the Southern California coastline, having drawn crowds to experience its renowned waves for decades. With a history rooted in surf culture and the perfect right-hand point break, the venue is the ultimate canvas for longboarders to showcase their unique styles to the world. The race for the World Title is tight, but only one man and one woman will walk away as the 2022 Longboard World Champions.

Reigning World Champion Honolua Blomfield Seeks Fourth World Title

Honolua Blomfield (HAW) is the reigning World Champion, winning her first World Title at just 18 years of age and her third in 2021. Blomfield, from the North Shore of Oahu, is considered one of the best noseriders in surfing. Even though she comes into this event with a significant rankings lead, her fight is not yet over as she needs to look out for Chloe Calmon (BRA), Soleil Errico (USA) and Rachael Tilly (USA) who are not far behind. As the pressure builds into tomorrow, Blomfield has her eyes on that fourth World Title.

Hot on her heels is World No. 2 Calmon, who is seeking her first World Title, and become the first Brazilian woman to achieve this feat. Calmon placed second under Blomfield at the Sydney Surf Pro and is now looking for redemption. This goofy-footer is more than confident on her backhand and is ready for the peeling right-handers at Malibu.

Current World No. 3 is Malibu, California’s own Errico. The local hero brought a World Title home in 2018 at the age of 17 and now looks to bring her surf-rich community another big event win. With her talented ability to connect drop-knee turns and noserides, Errico will be battling hard for her second World Title here at Malibu.

Tied with Errico for third place in the rankings is San Clemente local Tilly. Tilly, who is a few months younger than Errico, claimed the title of youngest World Champion at age 17 back in 2015 and has been searching for her second title ever since.

“I missed competing over the past two years and am really enjoying being amongst the excitement and energy of all the women,” said Tilly. “It’s been a fun year so far traveling and competing with them and to finish the season off at Malibu is great. Malibu is a perfect canvas to put on a show, and I can’t wait to watch the men and surf with the women!”

All of these top-ranked competitors will have their work cut out for them as the entire women’s contingent is staked with an abundance of talents from around the world including World No. 5 Kelis Kaleopa’a (HAW), Tully White(AUS), Natsumi Taoka (JPN) and Alice Lemoigne (FRA).

Kaniela Stewart Sets Eyes on Maiden World Title

Known in the surfing community as the “style master", Waikiki’s Kaniela Stewart (HAW) has both elegance and power on the waves. He jumped two spots on the rankings after placing 2nd at the Vans US Open of Surfing Duct Tape Invitational. Now, Stewart is sitting as World No. 1 and has an opportunity to take home his first World Title.

“I am super excited to head into Malibu at the top of the rankings and looking at a chance to win my first World Title,” said Stewart. “I just have to stay super focused and keep a good mindset. Something that I’ve noticed in my surfing that has made me improve in the last few years is the flow, style, and drawing the right lines going into maneuvers and coming out of them. The most important thing I’ve been focusing on is making sure that there is little to no space for errors, so like no falling, no wobbly movements, making sure everything is super controlled, and making sure every maneuver is performed at its best.”

Taylor Jensen (USA) and Harrison Roach (AUS) are both currently tied for the second position on the rankings. Like Blomfield, Jensen is also fighting for his fourth World Title. Jensen defeated Stewart during the Finals at the Vans US Open of Surfing Duct Tape Invitational and hopes to be able to take him down again at Malibu. Roach is recognized in Australia and around the world as one of the best longboarders on the planet. He started the year off with a bang, winning the first event of the season but still has yet to win his first World Title.

These three renowned surfers are more than capable of claiming the World Title, but with 10,000 points up for grabs it’s almost anyone’s game. World No. 4 and WSL Longboard Tour veteran Ben Skinner (GBR) is sure to put on a show as he has a chance to become the first British World Champion. Skinner will be joined by a long list of Tour veterans including Kai Sallas (HAW), Tony Silvagni (USA), and Jefson Silva (BRA) as well as the fresh faces of Declan Wyton (AUS), Tosh Tudor (USA) and Kaimana Takayama (USA), who are hoping to make their mark at Malibu.

To help add clarity and perspective to the scoring, Longboard Head Judge Tory Gilkerson shares her years of experience and breaks down what may be happening in the judges' tower.

It'll be streammed live on thier site.

From Brad Jacobson:

"Have you ever caught a wave that you rode so long your legs started burning? When I thought about doing a leg-burning episode I immediately looked for clips from Malibu. Malibu is know for its long wide open waves. These clips were taking from one day (July 19th, 2022) at Malibu.

Thanks for watching. I'm Brad Jacobson and I'll see ya on the sand."

A perfect day in Malibu...again! Start off the day with a morning surf. Then, Kyle, Brian, Brandon, and I get rowdy at first point. We end the evening with full on Golden Hour at third point.
