Updated to the news of the Human Remains Found under Ballona Creek Bridge on Saturday:

Cause of Death: Gunshot Wound of the Torso

Manner of Death: Homicide

Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 49-year-old male whose body was found under the Culver Boulevard bridge in Playa del Rey.

The coroner’s office has identified the man as Anthony Ussery and gave his race/ethnicity as White/Caucasian.

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Saturday at 12:42 p.m.

The decedent’s body was retrieved by lifeguards, fire personnel and a swift water rescue team from a “shed-like” structure beneath a bridge at the Ballona Creek flood control channel.

On Saturday, LAFD was on the scene to recover apparent human remains within an impromptu shelter constructed beneath the Culver Blvd Bridge above Ballona Creek in Playa DelRey.

LAFD crews have accessed and systematically searched the shed-like structure in a concealed space below the Culver Boulevard bridge (approximately 20' above slow moving 10-15' deep tidal water in the Ballona Creek flood control channel) to discover the remains of an approximately 40 year-old male (undetermined body condition / site affiliation / circumstances), who has been determined deceased at the scene.

No other persons injured.

Upon the joint approval of LAPD Detectives now leading the investigation and the Medical Examiner's Investigator, LAFD personnel will assist in the safe and dignified removal of the body from the still difficult to access shed-like structure, at a yet to be determined time. A positive identification of the decedent, as well as the specific cause, time and manner of their death will be determined by the Medical Examiner's Office.

Culver Boulevard (eastbound and westbound) will remain closed to all traffic between Jefferson Boulevard and Lincoln Boulevard until LAPD/Medical Examiner on-site operations are complete. Motorists should avoid the immediate area and consider an alternate route. Detours are available. No time estimate to street reopening.

Mike, aka German in Venice, vlogs about daily life in Venice Beach, and the nearby communities.

"Today, I explored LA‘s hidden treasure in Marina del Rey. It’s the Fishermans Village, they have a lighthouse. It kind a looks like New England style homes, really colorful. I took the boat taxi around the marina. You see incredible boats, yards, and a pretty cool apartments. Not too many people walk around the Fishermans village. at the end I had dinner at the Cheesecake Factory. It was incredible day."

URGENT COASTAL ALERT: California coasts are experiencing a significant increase in sea lions and dolphins suffering from domoic acid (DA) poisoning due to a toxic algal bloom. If you see any marine mammals on the beach the public should keep away at least 50 yards & call Marine Mammal Care Center's Rescue Hotline at 1-800-39-WHALE.

More on DA poisening: Pseudo-nitzschia blooms (toxic algal blooms) offshore along the Central and Southern California coast. This algae produces a neurotoxin called domoic acid, which accumulates in fish such as sardines, anchovies, and squid. The toxin then transfers to predators such as sea lions and birds that prey on the fish—causing seizures, brain damage, and sometimes death.

Symptoms of DA poisoning in Marine mammals include side-to-side head movement, seizing, bulging eyes, extending their heads back for long periods, and erratic behavior.

The Marine Mammal Protection Act states that "it is illegal to feed or harass wild marine mammals including dolphins, porpoises, whales, seals, sea lions, and manatees."

Marine Mammal Care Los Angeles ius currently caring for over 50 domoic acid (DA) patients as they strand on SoCal beaches. The increase in distressed animals reported to MMCC is putting strains on resources as they continue to deal with the many young animals already in their care following the annual pup season this spring. To care for the increased volume of patients, it is likely to cost more than $250,000. Your support is needed now more than ever.
