From Santa Monica Close Up:

"As part of its annual beach grooming activities, Los Angeles County Public Works began backfilling the Pico-Kenter outfall and reseal stormwater pond on Thursday, June 2, 2022. It is advised not to swim near the site where stormwater will be released, where Pico Blvd reaches the ocean. The work involves creating a barrier by filling in Pico-Kenter to remove any stagnant or ponded water at the site. The barrier also diverts any dry urban runoff to the sanitary sewer system for treatment. This work helps ensure better ocean water quality around the Pico-Kenter site. "

Nick Gabaldón Day will take place on Saturday, June 18, 2022 from 9AM – 4:30PM.

Nick Gabaldón (1927-1951) was a pioneering surfer of African American and Mexican American descent. He was the first documented surfer of color in the Santa Monica Bay. Gabaldón’s passion, athleticism, discipline, love, and respect for the ocean live on as the quintessential qualities of the California surfer.

In 2013, with the help of African American historian Alison Rose Jefferson, Heal the Bay joined forces with the Black Surfers Collective to amplify and expand their prior Nick Gabaldón efforts. Nick Gabaldón Day, in its current form, is now in its 10th year and will be held on June 18, 2022. This innovative celebration provides an amazing opportunity for broadening outreach, action, and education to connect Angelenos with their cultural, historical, and natural heritage.

RSVP to the events by signing up at Nick Gabaldon Day Registration.

The Black Surfers Collective, Heal the Bay, Surf Bus Foundation, Color the Water and the Santa Monica Conservancy, partner on the Nick Gabaldón Day programming to reach out to families in resourced challenged communities to inspire, engage and empower them through meaningful educational programming. We are helping build personal experiences with cultural, historical and nature heritage and civic engagement that are the foundation of stewardship, and the development of the next generation of civic, and heritage conservation and environmental leaders.

Heal the Bay Aquarium under the Santa Monica Pier will be free for all visitors in honor of Nick on Saturday, June 18 thanks to a grant from Northrop Grumman. A celebrity guest reader will pop in for story time and special art activities will be offered, as well as screenings of documentaries exploring issues of race, coastal access, and following your passion against all odds.

For more info and the schedule of events, visit Nick Gabaldon Day 2022. ,

Vending has been a special part of the Santa Monica experience for decades. Joe Cavin, Santa Monica's Fire Marshal, discusses how vending can be done safely and effectively in the City of Santa Monica. The program is designed to be accessible, and many areas of the City are available to permitted vendors, including roaming sales on the beach and most of Palisades Park. In select public spaces, including the Santa Monica Pier, vending is not permitted given the fire risk and limited accessibility of this narrow, wooden structure.

On May 6, 2022, at about 1:45 PM, a male was lying on a park bench at Tongva Park when he was confronted by a group of male and female juveniles. One of the young males grabbed a cellphone out of his hand, then ran. Another male juvenile then brandished a knife and made a threat, before all the juveniles fled the area. A short time later, he saw one of the female juveniles involved in the initial robbery, sitting on the east end of the park. He confronted her and took her cellphone as leverage to get his phone back. The large group of juveniles returned to assist and became involved in a physical altercation. During the fight, he and another male trying to intervene, were both stabbed. SMFD responded and both victims were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening wounds. Several juveniles were detained and interviewed. Multiple knives were recovered. The following arrests were made:

• 1 male juvenile booked for robbery and assault with a deadly weapon
• 1 male juvenile booked for robbery
• 1 female juvenile booked for robbery
• Joseph Zachariah Theus, 19-year-old from Los Angeles, was booked for providing false ID to police, cited and released

Anyone with any additional information pertaining to this incident is strongly encouraged to contact Detective Haro at 310-458-8432

The world-famous Santa Monica Pier will host a weekend full of World Tour and Open racing, as well as our City Paddle Festival with a $25,000 prize purse on offer.

Jun 24, 5:00 PM – Jun 27, 5:00 PM

Registration for all Pro-Am and Amateur races can be found HERE and all pre-qualified athletes will recieve entry information directly from the APP.

The US Open of SUP at Santa Monica Pier will be the most inclusive and high-profile SUP event to have taken place in the US for many years. The Event will bring together Professional Competition, with Amateur and Corporate participation, as well as youth and health and wellness enthusiasts all wrapped up into our City Paddle Festival and World Championship Tour stop.

As the US flagship stop of the APP World Championship Tour, the US Open of SUP will feature all the World’s very best Stand Up Paddle Racers as they kick off their 2022 campaign for the World Title and for the 25k prize purse at the iconic Pier.

The Sprint Racing in the surf will provide a dynamic sporting spectacle in a fast paced, elimination format that will see the top contenders competing round after round until the Final. There will also be a slightly shorter, 8km/ 5 miles distance race from Topanga to Santa Monica Pier for all non-professionals to compete in.

Whilst there will be non-stop competitive SUP action, our City Paddle Festival will provide plenty more opportunities to enjoy the water and the ‘So-Cal’ life. With SUP yoga, youth clinics, fun racing and relays, our City Paddle Festival will fully immerse you into the life of Stand Up Paddling and will provide plenty of entertainment in-between. There will be live music, entertainment and food and drinks for when you need to relax in between adventures or cheering on the pros.

Whether you're hanging with the family, competing on land or at sea or partying with your friends– the City Paddle Festival has got it all!
