Residents in the Philips Ranch neighborhood of Pomona say someone prowling around vehicles late at night broke into one woman's van and made off with some unusual items: her dog's surfboards.

Susan Gan's dog, Giselle, loves to surf, and she's made it more than a hobby. Giselle is a competitive surfer, and she has a few wins under her leash.

After a thief broke into Gan's van early Monday morning, Giselle might be landlocked for a while.

A homeowner caught a man lurking around her vehicle on surveillance footage that night. Later, Gan's van was hit just down the street. Residents believe it was likely the same man.

The thief stole two surfboards, and it could not have come at a worse time for Susan and Giselle. The dog was set to compete this weekend in Northern California.

Giselle's sponsor was, however, able to loan her a few boards.

"We will not be able to completely customize it before we leave on Wednesday night. We'll do it well enough where we can compete," Gan said.

Gan is happy that Giselle will still be out on the water this weekend, but for her, those boards are important.

"The board holds a lot of memories for us. She has won many championships with those boards," Gan said. "All I want is for the people who took those boards to bring them back. No questions asked."

Vans presents BLACK RAINBOWS, a 10-day immersive experience in Venice Beach, California that transports fans back to 1976 to celebrate the energetic time period and place that Vans’ first skateboarding shoe was born.

In 1976, Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta worked with the Vans family and created a shoe designed specifically designed for skateboarding. What they did next with that shoe set off a cultural explosion that sent shockwaves around the globe. Vans will commemorate the history and origins of the Era in the neighborhood between Santa Monica and Venice Beach known as Dogtown where these events took shape.

BLACK RAINBOWS is aimed at reinforcing Vans' brand promise of enabling creative expression through action sports, art, music and street culture. Vans has partnered with Dogtown legend Jeff Ho, famed owner of the Zephyr Surf Shop and Jim Muir, original Z-Boy and skate Hall of Fame inductee, to bring forward an authentic depiction of the birth of a cultural icon; the Era. BLACK RAINBOWS’ interactive programming and highlights will include Vans skate demos, panel discussions with Vans Designers and skate legends, art and music workshops, film screenings and will culminate with live musical performances.

There is a smidgen of mid-period SSE swell on SoCal beaches today, although that’s about the best we expect from Flossie for the Golden State.

Flossie is only a modest-size tropical cyclone. Currently weakening and looks mediocre on satellite imagery (although it may restrengthen slightly later this week). Tracking west, away from California/Baja (ideal track would be north, coming back toward those regions). Booking out to the west at 14 knots – really bad for California a

Wednesday: 3’ waves at summer/combo breaks, 4’+ at standouts. Light/variable wind in AM hours. Fun long period South swell (190-175) continues to fill in through the day as well as some mid/short period SSE/S swell from Tropical Storm Dalila. The blend is good for waist-chest high waves at the south-facing and combo exposures of North LA.

Conditions should be cleaner right out of the gates compared to Tuesday morning, with light/variable flow in the earlier morning. Light SW veering Westerly winds trend up through the morning – adding texture/minor bump – then picking in the afternoon with moderate W/WNW winds.

Thursday: 3-4’ waves at summer/combo breaks. Light/variable onshore flow through the morning hours. Long period south swell (190-175) tops out through the day while modest NW windswell mixes in. We’ll also see that small tropical swell from Dalila, but that tropical energy won’t be more than modest-sized and primarily help with shape at the beach breaks. Surf is up a notch with waist-shoulder high waves at south-facing/combo exposures of North LA.

Light SE/ESE winds through north LA will also put lumps on the south-facing breaks.

Lightning strike observed in Marina Del Rey this morning around 9:30am. The LA County Lifeguards are clearing the beaches, until the storm passes.
