California State Parks announced the arrest of a suspect on a charge of felony arson related to a brush fire that ignited on Jan. 8 near Leo Carrillo State Park (SP) in Los Angeles County. The region has been under a red flag warning, with severe fire danger intensified by powerful Santa Ana winds, which have fueled multiple destructive wildfires across Southern California.

The suspect, Gloria Lynn Mandich, 60, was taken into custody on suspicion of starting the fire and booked into Ventura County Jail on a felony charge of arson under Penal Code 451(d). She is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court today.

The fire was quickly extinguished by the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

California State Parks urges the public to remain alert during red flag warnings and to report any suspicious activity to authorities immediately. As a precaution due to the dangerously high winds, Leo Carrillo SP's campground will remain closed to the public through Friday, Jan. 10.

The 330th Military Police, part of the law enforcement branch of the California National Guard, are stationed at traffic control points around Santa Monica to ensure the safety of the surrounding community. The integrity of these traffic control points is vital to ensuring emergency vehicles can move unimpeded and our neighborhoods remain protected. National Guard support in our city helps build capacity of the SMPD to safeguard our residents during this emergency.

Chief Batista: “Having the National Guard in our city and working side by side with the men and women of the Santa Monica Police Department should send a strong message to those who would defy evacuation orders to prey on Santa Monicans in this moment of duress. Criminal actions will not be tolerated. Our officers are vigilant, and we are fully prepared to arrest and hold offenders accountable.”

For 25 years, Cholada Thai has been more than just a restaurant to me – it has been my life. I have spent nearly every single day at the restaurant, pouring my heart into every dish, every interaction, and every moment spent with our amazing customers. Cholada isn’t just a business; it’s a place where I’ve built lifelong relationships, served countless families, and worked side by side with an incredible team.

Unfortunately, as many of you know, Cholada Thai was destroyed in the devastating Palisades Fire. This loss isn’t just a physical structure – it’s a piece of my heart, and it’s the loss of a special place that meant so much to the Malibu community.

Why I Need Your Help

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health cautions residents who are planning to visit the below Los Angeles County beaches to avoid swimming, surfing, and playing in ocean waters:

January 10, 2025

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health urges residents to avoid swimming, surfing, and playing in ocean waters at the following Los Angeles County beaches.

The Department advises beach users to avoid all water contact, especially near discharging storm drains, creeks, and rivers, due to potential debris and contamination from fires. This includes any runoff that may flow onto or pond on the beach sand. An ocean water advisory is being issued because of the uncertain amount of fire-fighting runoff, which may contain toxic chemicals and debris that have entered the ocean during fire-fighting operations.

This advisory applies to ocean and bay waters from Surfrider Beach to Dockweiler State Beach at World Way. People entering these waters could become ill. The advisory will remain in effect until three days after fire-fighting efforts end and notification is provided by the Department of Public Health.

Additional Specific Beach Area Warnings:

· Malibu Point at Surfrider Beach. Near Malibu Tower 3: 100 yards up and down the coast from Lifeguard Tower #3.

· Solstice Creek at Dan Blocker County Beach: 100 yards up and down the coast from the creek.

· Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro: The entire swim area.

These warnings have been issued due to bacterial levels exceeding health standards when last tested.

The Palisade Fire completely destroyed the Tahitian Terrace Mobile Home park on Pacific Coast Highway across from Will Rogers Beach, which also had their maintenance yard burned, including several of the work vehicles.

Throughout the past several days the SMPD and our mutual aid partners have contacted hundreds of people on foot or in cars and we have arrested individuals in our evacuation and evacuation warning zones that were in possession of weapons, stolen property or wanted for serious felony crimes in our region.

To those considering coming to our city to commit crimes or victimize our residents, your actions will not be tolerated and we will not allow you to prey on our residents during a time of crisis.

Day and night, we remain dedicated to ensuring the security of your homes and loved ones. Our team is proactively monitoring the evacuation zone, and all sworn officers have transitioned to a tactical alert, ensuring that we have a full contingent of officers available 24 hours a day. During this period we received assistance from our mutual aid partner cities, special thanks to Culver City, Beverly Hills, UCLA, Hawthorne and Redondo Beach. These resources have been a crucial part of our proactive public safety efforts. We are steadfast in our commitment to respond swiftly to any needs that arise.

Safety is a partnership between the police and the community—it is also our strongest weapon as we fight crime. We need everyone to follow the curfew orders, the curfew order for the evacuation zone is in effect from sunset to sunrise. Two homelees people were spotted lighting a fire behind SaMoHi at 302 Pico in Santa Monica. A couple of people driving by rushed over to try to put it out. The Fire Department arrived about 20 minutes after being called and put it out fully.

Today, January 9, 2025, at approximately 1:00 p.m., SuperScooper Quebec 1 was struck by a civilian drone illegally flying in the Palisades fire area.



Quebec 1 sustained wing damage and remains grounded and out of service. There were no reported injuries. The incident is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration.

The LACoFD would like to remind everyone that flying a drone in the midst of firefighting efforts is a federal crime and punishable by up to 12 months in prison or a fine of up to $75,000.

The city of Santa Monica has issued an evacuation order for all areas above San Vicente Boulevard and an evacuation warning for the area north of Montana Avenue in response to the Palisades Fire.

An evacuation order indicates there is an immediate threat to life and all area residents are lawfully ordered to leave immediately. The area is closed to public access. 

An evacuation warning indicates there is a potential threat to life and/or property. People in this area should gather essentials and be ready to leave the area if an order is issued. Those who require additional time to evacuate, and those with pets and livestock should leave immediately. 

“It is imperative that residents follow evacuation orders for their safety and the safety of our community,” Mayor Lana Negrete said. “The city of Santa Monica is closely monitoring this very dynamic and changing situation and our hearts go out to all who are affected. I also want to express my deepest gratitude to the first responders who are working tirelessly on the front lines of this emergency.”

Emergency services are deployed to the impacted areas, including Santa Monica Police personnel assisting with evacuations. We urge all residents to follow police instructions immediately and without hesitation. These orders are issued to protect lives and ensure the safety of everyone in the community.

Some city services in this area are suspended until further notice: street sweeping, trash/recycling/bulky item/alley pickup and the Montana Branch Library. 

Free Big Blue Bus transport to the Palisades Fire evacuation center at Westwood Recreation Center, 1350 S. Sepulveda Blvd, 90025, will be available starting at 8 p.m. Buses will leave hourly.

Fire breaks out in Pacific Palisades on Tuesday at 10:30AM. High winds reported to be rated as hurricane strength , clocking in a high as 85 mph. It spread from 10 acres to over 200 acres in about 30 minutes.



UPDATE 1/7, 12pm - Southbound Pacific Coast Highway is closed at Topanga Canyon Blvd due to the brush fire response in Pacific Palisades. Extremely dangerous fire weather, high winds continue. Be cautious on the roads, watch for emergency personnel. Be prepared for evacuations.



In Malibu, SCE is shutting off power to Cuthbert, Galahad, Cuthbert circuits in Malibu due to dangerous fire weather. Other circuits may follow.
