Join Heal the Bay for Coastal Cleanup Month 2021 in Los Angeles County this September as we embark on Healing Our Watersheds. We are all connected through our watersheds and together we can help them heal. This is our biggest cleanup of the year. So, don’t miss out on making a giant impact in LA by doing a cleanup near you.

Our dedicated volunteers removed 40,101 pieces of trash from our neighborhoods, parks, trails, and beaches last year. Together we’ve tracked more than 4 million pieces of trash picked up by volunteers at LA County beaches to date, and this informs and influences public policy and business practices.

See Heal the Bay for more info.

Elevated surf & dangerous rip currents expected tonight thru Labor Day. Surf up to 3 to 5 feet can be expected across south-facing beaches of LA County.

Saturday, September 4th: PM sees 2-3′ waves from fresh, slow rising SSW swell. Morning starts off slow with most spots staying under waist high, but a new round of modest scale, long-period SSW swell gradually fills in during the day. In the afternoon the rising Southern Hemi puts well exposed breaks of northern LA in thigh to waist high surf. Largest late. A little NW windswell lingers through the day. Light/variable winds early, shift to a sea breeze later morning, then rise to light+/locally more onshores for the afternoon. Evening winds look to ease in most areas, as the tide heads for a deep 6′ high about an hour after sunset.

Sunday, September 5th: 3-4′ surf off SSW swell, most size in the PM. For the morning, a building, long-period SSW swell has better exposures of northern LA in waist to chest high range waves. More SSW swell shows over the afternoon, putting more of those well exposed spots in chest to shoulder high surf. Bit more NW windswell due to mix in, but it’s still small, waist high or under. Light/variable winds for much of the morning, followed by light+/locally more afternoon onshores. The sea breeze is expected to taper off by the evening for most of the coast, as the tide steadily rises towards a 6’+ high about 90 minutes after sunset.

This past weekend in Malibu, two homeless people brutally attacked a family.

The two homeless people confronted a family on Dan Blocker Beach on Sunday, saying they were not allowed in the area, sparking an argument between the dad and the two homeless people. One of the suspects, later identified as Richard Franck, whipped out a machete and began slashing the dad multiple times. The violent attack resulted in the dad losing his eye.

The other four family members were then chased away by them, LASD said.

Both suspects were eventually found and arrested. Both are being charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon.

One of the suspects, Richard Franck, was arrested back in February for threatening a sheriff's deputy with a knife. He spent only spent for days in jail and was released by the District Attorney on a misdemeanor charge. This is according the Sheriff Villanueva, via his twitter posts:

Largest Southern Hemi Swell of the season.

On August 31, 2021, at about 12:54 AM, Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) Officers responded to a report of Shots Fired at the Santa Monica Pier. Comments on the call indicated the reporting party heard approximately 3-4 gunshots, then witnessed an unknown male running towards the Ferris Wheel and out of sight.

When Officers arrived on scene, they met with a witness who reported that she recovered a handgun dropped by a male while he was trying to jump over a fence. Officers did not find any victims; however, the Officers located spent casings and impact holes on a wall. All the parties to the shooting fled prior to Officers arriving and no suspects were arrested.

At this time, SMPD detectives are attempting to identify and locate the following subject who dropped the handgun at the scene:

• Male Hispanic, 25-30 years-old, approximately 5’7”, black hair, brown eyes wearing a black hat and black clothing.

Anyone with additional information pertaining to this incident or individual is strongly encouraged to contact Detective Tavera with the Criminal Investigations Division at 310-458-2256 or the Santa Monica Department’s Watch Commander (24 hours) at 310-458-8427.

From Brad Jacobson:

"I spent 2 days in Malibu filming some of the most fun surf I've seen in a long time leaving me questioning if this was the best swell since Hurricane Marie.

Watching these waves roll for 2 straight days was simply mesmerizing. Unfortunately the surf forecast looks bleak so I'm left grasping these memories until something new pops on the radar... hopefully sooner than later.

Special thanks to Luke Davis and Hunter Jones for the phone interviews.

Thanks for watching. I'm Brad Jacobson and I'll see you on the sand."
