It's official, ZJ Boarding House announced today that they will be closing the shop for good.

"We are so grateful for all the love and support over the last 32 years. We couldn’t have done it without all of you! Sunday will be our last day open—we will close at 6pm." they wrote this afternoon on their Instagram.

Why is ZJ closing? Well, it has nothing to do with the Coronavirus. Business has been good (of course, you've all seen the increase in surfers in the water these past few months). We unofficially found out it was due to the lease negotiations. The shop was actually getting ready the building to be renovated and remodeled, hence the "remodeling sale" that had been going on for the past two weeks. Then all of a sudden, the powers that be and the landlord couldn't agree on a new lease, so now that "remodel sale" is now a "closing sale". So if you ever wanted some ZJ Boarding House tees, hats, or hoodies, better head down there this weekend.

So with the shop closing is that the end of the Night Sesh Surf Movie Nights and Annual Haunted Heats Surf Contest? Well,....they may still happen, stay tuned.

The City Of Santa Monica made it known via their social media accounts that $100 tickets will be given to anyone not wearing a face mask. According to their statement, they are targeting certain areas first:

"Beginning this week, we’ll be doing targeted enforcement for face coverings in business districts and parks in Santa Monica. Save $100 and save your health by masking up."

But according to the City Of Santa Monica's Face Covering Requirement Page, face masks do not have to be worn 100% of the time, like when surfing or swimming. And if you're outside and not within 6' of other people, a face mask is not required, but a face mask "must be visible and ready to be immediately" when in certain public areas.

See the Face Covering Requirement Page for the complete requirements of when the must be worn and when they don't.

THIS SATURDAY
HISTORIC "BAY STREET BEACH"
SANTA MONICA
MELINATED SURF CIRCLE

SWIM. HAVE FUN. CONNECT. DIALOGUE

We are gathering community for a day of purpose. Back in the day this was a segregated stretch of beach were black people could enjoy aquatic culture with the least racial harassment and physical confrontation. In community, The Inkwell was renamed THE BAY STREET BEACH because "Inkwell" was a derrogatory term racist whites used to denigrate areas where black people gathered.

This Saturday...this Saturday we are pay homage and reconnect with those before us who paved the way to create our soulful history of aquatic culture. We are also celebrating those who today continue that legacy. The ocean is freedom and that freedom is for all of us.

So showing up in unity is the best form of resistance...it is a revolutionary act.

Showing up in numbers and being seen by each other is healing and affirming and joyful. We welcome you to join us at The Bay Street Beach. Paid parking is available at this spot. Light refreshments and hydration will be available. Bring everything that brings you comfort for the day...umbrellas, sun hats, sunscreen, your favorite eats. We will be there until sunset. That will be a beautiful hour to close a beautiful day!

Feel free to bring folk and repost!
Blessings

The man arrested is 26 year old Jacob Matthew Vanderburg.

We also found out some of the things he did before the police arrived. He was mouthing off to the lifeguard in Tower 28 and attempted to walk up on the tower. He had also took someone's boogy board and was bashing it into the sand.

As seen in the video we shot, he was heading back towards the lifeguard tower when the police approached him.

And here's some additional info from Patch.com:

He was arrested on suspicion of possession of a loaded firearm and possession of illegal high capacity magazine. Lt. Joseph Cortez of the SMPD told Patch.com that he apparently had a firearm holstered on his hip and police received information that he was possibly brandishing the gun.

"When speaking with the subject, officers became concerned about his mental health," Cortez said. "The officer placed the man on a mental evaluation hold, pursuant to 5150 WIC."

Here's our original story we posted about this:

On Thursday, at 12:15PM, beach-goers near Tower 28 in Ocean Park spotted a man with what appeared to be a handgun in his belt.

The Santa Monica Police were called and showed up to apprehended him.

He was walking towards Lifeguard Tower 28 when the cops approached him. "I didn't do anything...let me go." and "I'm gettin' outta this town, I don't like these fuckin' liberals." are among some of the things he yelled to the police as they drew their guns on him and instructed him to get down.

He was placed in cuffs fairly quickly, while yelling, "Blue lives matter!" among other ramblings.

He shouted "You better get back to work and stop protesting in the street..you understand me!" to all the on-lookers who were watching him and his fancy hat being escorted off the sand to the police vehicles parked in the lot.

While getting placed in the police vehicle, he gets heckled by the dude from the nearby surf school to which he responds by threatening to come back and kill him.

The guy's VW car was parked on Bernard Way in front of Ocean View Park. It had Ohio Army Veteran plates on it, and inside the car was several large knives and a small axe. During the police search of the vehicle, they also found a sleeping bag in the back seat, and in the truck was clothing, food, a laptop, pots & pans, and more household items.

No word on this from the SMPD yet, but according to the surf school dude's heckling, the man will be spending the next 5 years having anal sex.

There have always been amazingly talented women skateboarders but there’s no denying that Vans Pro and Tony Hawk protégé, Santa Monica's Lizzie Armanto, is one of the most groundbreaking ladies in skateboard history. Pouring sweat, skill, and creativity into full parts for both Thrasher Magazine and Birdhouse in 2017, she also became the first female to be featured on the cover of Transworld Skateboarding in addition to Thrasher cover honors. Armanto is also one of the leaders of a new onslaught of fierce women skaters making names for themselves in the Vans Park Series circuit.

If that’s not enough, she’s also the first female skater to successfully complete Tony Hawk’s 360 Loop, in addition to being featured as a primary character in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 video game. With over 30 awards on her mantle, along with the first-ever Gold in X-Games Womens Park competition in 2013, Lizzie’s path is paved in milestones and setting the tone for generations of women in skateboarding.

A true embodiment of Vans’ DNA, Lizzie Armanto is an icon of originality and positivity. With her down-to-earth, fashion-forward, barrier-breaking approach, it’s no wonder Lizzie has become a role model to skateboarders around the world.

Never one to remain complacent in her style both on and off the board, Lizzie’s fun approach is reflected in her latest collection with Vans, featuring the Old Skool Pro Lizzie Armanto and a signature apparel pack infused with Lizzie’s signature beating-heart graphic and positive messaging. The design takes cues from natural tones and wild terrain, according to Lizzie:

“My latest collection was inspired from a photo I took of a spring time California landscape, covered in plants and wildflowers.”

The Old Skool Pro Lizzie packs bold style and serious performance into a shoe for those who aspire to Lizzie’s arresting abilities on a skateboard. The shoe’s full-suede, antique-white upper with debossed Checkerboard combines with a translucent Sidestripe and a contrasting black rubber sole, creating a graceful aesthetic with a bit of attitude. Lizzie’s initials are debossed on the heelcup as well as printed alongside her signature beating-heart graphic on an olive-gold sockliner.

The shoe features PopCush, Vans’ brand-new, Pro-Skate-exclusive technology. A meticulously tuned foam recipe offers impact protection, superior cushioning, and better energy return for every type of skating. As the brand’s most progressive sockliner to date, PopCush is Vans’ standard best-in-class upgrade for skating longer and harder.

Original gum rubber compound offers superior grip and support, while Pro Vulc Lite construction provides ultimate boardfeel, flex, and grip. DURACAP reinforced underlays in high-wear areas add unrivaled durability and prolong the life of the shoe.

Accompanying the Lizzie’s Old Skool Pro is a line of signature apparel, including the Heart Lizzie baby tee in blue surf, legging in black, coaches jacket in antique white, backpack in antique white, sock in white, and hat in black. Lizzie’s signature beating-heart graphic can be found across the collection, from prominent placement on the baby tee to a more subtle nod on the inside front lining of the coaches jacket. A reminder to “skate with heart” is emblazoned on the legging’s interior waist band and backpack’s strap.

The Vans Old Skool Pro Lizzie Armanto Pack is now available at Vans retailers and vans.com/skate.

More Patagonia looters have been caught. First, one of surfboard looters got arrested, now the looters that stole the safe out of the store have been arrested.

According to the press release, on July 3rd, 2020 Santa Monica Police Department Detectives from the Special Investigations Unit and officers from the Crime Impact Team served multiple search and arrests warrants at different locations in Los Angeles County related to the damage and looting of Patagonia located at 1344 4th Street on May 31st. Several suspects were able to remove a safe from the business. Detectives identified six suspects involved in the looting and theft of the safe.

Four suspects were arrested and booked for burglary, conspiracy and looting during a riot:
Ulises Alcantara JUAREZ DOB: 07-23-94 Male, Hispanic
Alfredo Fernando BELLO DOB: 06-07-96 Male, Hispanic
Yesenia Enriquez TEJADA DOB: 02-04-95 Female, Hispanic
Debbie LUJAN DOB: 10-15-96 Female, Hispanic

Evidence related to the looting, including the safe, were recovered and booked into evidence.

These arrests still do not excuse the fact that the Santa Monica Police allowed this to happen in the first place, and the fact that the Santa Monica Police Chief and several city council members blatantly lied about what happened.

As we all know, the Santa Monica Police ignored all the warnings about the upcoming looting attack on the city, and their incompetence led to the looting of over 100 stores in the Downtown Santa Monica.

Now, two of the looters who hit REI and VANS have been arrested.

According to their press release, Detectives with the Santa Monica Police Department scoured hours of security video and social media posts. A suspect vehicle was identified by searching social media videos of the civil unrest. It showed a vehicle license plate with two suspects loading various items from REI. After reviewing REI security video, the two subjects were identified inside the store removing thousands of dollars of merchandise. During the investigation one of individuals was also identified as the suspect of an assault on a police officer.

The Manhattan Beach Police Department stopped the wanted vehicle and notified Santa Monica Police Department Detectives. The occupants of the vehicle were determined to be the two outstanding suspects and were subsequently arrested.

A search of the suspect vehicle pursuant to a search warrant led to the recovery of several stolen items from both the REI and the VANS store.

Suspect #1 is Sebastian Martinez (2/22/1996) of El Segundo, CA. Suspect #2 is Christopher Gutierrez (11/5/2000) of Los Angeles. Both now in SMPD custody.

These arrests still do not excuse the fact that the Santa Monica Police allowed this to happen in the first place, and the fact that the Santa Monica Police Chief and several city council members blatantly lied about what happened.
