Vans presents BLACK RAINBOWS, a 10-day immersive experience in Venice Beach, California that transports fans back to 1976 to celebrate the energetic time period and place that Vans’ first skateboarding shoe was born. “BLACK RAINBOWS” aren’t just marks left by wallrides from skateboards, they are symbols of the creative reinterpretation of the world around you. Beginning August 9th– 18th, Vans will continue to elevate the Classic Era and honor the ubiquitous silhouette as an icon of creative expression past and present.

In 1976, Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta worked with the Vans family and created a shoe designed specifically designed for skateboarding. What they did next with that shoe set off a cultural explosion that sent shockwaves around the globe. Vans will commemorate the history and origins of the Era in the neighborhood between Santa Monica and Venice Beach known as Dogtown where these events took shape.

BLACK RAINBOWS is aimed at reinforcing Vans' brand promise of enabling creative expression through action sports, art, music and street culture. Vans has partnered with Dogtown legend Jeff Ho, famed owner of the Zephyr Surf Shop and Jim Muir, original Z-Boy and skate Hall of Fame inductee, to bring forward an authentic depiction of the birth of a cultural icon; the Era. BLACK RAINBOWS’ interactive programming and highlights will include Vans skate demos, panel discussions with Vans Designers and skate legends, art and music workshops, film screenings and will culminate with live musical performances.

July was a good month for waves at our local spots and we got a ton of surf photos from a bunch of days at different spots, from Venice up to Leo Carrillo.

Below is the list of Surf Spots with the days we got photos for during the entire month of July. Each link will take you to the page with a few surf photos and at the bottom of those photos there will be a link to that photographer's gallery where you can find all the surf photos for that day (many times there's well over 100 photos to check out). Most of these photographers offer high-res downloads and prints for sale.

A man wearing a clown costume and hanging out the sunroof of a car led authorities on a pursuit from Orange County to Venice Beach before being taken into custody on Saturday, officials said.

A caller reported seeing the clown hanging out on the sunroof of a car while driving, CHP Officer Stephan Brandt said.

The driver refused to stop when officers tried to pull him over, kicking off a pursuit, the officer said.

The clown-masked suspect headed into Los Angeles County via the northbound 405 Freeway, then took the 90 Freeway to Venice Beach, Brandt said. The driver jumped out of the car and ran onto the beach, where he was captured by officers in front of a crowd of onlookers.

A female passenger who had been riding in the car was not arrested, he said.

The motivation for the driver's unusual behavior was not clear.

The lifeguard tower on the Venice Pier was broken into late Friday night.

The unofficial info we got was that one or two people broke into the tower, they rummaged through everything and made a mess. They smoked out while inside, then they took off with 2 surfboards that were stored in there. We will update with more info and the board photos once they are available.

Here's some of the photos from Saturday morning at the Venice Pier. This set was shot by Six12 Media.

You can find over 70 more photos from this session, all full size and in high-resolution, in this photo gallery:

One of the key figures in the early evolution of skateboarding from a wholesome, contest based "sport" into the freewheeling art form that it is today was Tony Alva.

At 61-years-old Alva, the oldest professional skateboarder in the world, is considered by many to be the godfather of modern day skateboarding. Alva’s brand of aggression and bravado in the 70’s set the stage for the way skateboarding would be forever defined. Vans’ The Tony Alva Story chronicles T.A.’s humble beginnings on the streets of Santa Monica to his rise to superstardom as part of the legendary Z-Boys, his inevitable drug-induced implosion and his ultimate rise from the ashes to accept his rightful place as a beacon of hope and inspiration for generations of skateboarders the world over.
