The week of the event, we need volunteers to help out Friday afternoon and all day Saturday. Volunteers will receive an event t-shirt, hat and the satisfaction of being a part of another fantastic Paddleboard Race & Ocean Festival.
The Clif Paddleboard Race & Ocean Festival
on June 10th, 2017 is an annual all-day, family friendly celebration of decades of surf, paddleboard and lifeguard history. Tracing its roots back to the 1930’s Santa Monica Pier paddleboard races – some of the first in the world – this year’s event offers epic competition. Courses start and finish on the sand immediately south of the Pier and there are 5 ways to compete - Fun Paddle, Long Course, Elite Race, Clif SUP / Paddleboard Knockout.
Volunteer Descriptions
Goody Bag Stuffing- The day before the race hundreds of goody bags must be stuffed with items for the racers. This role is great if you want to be involved, but are not available on race day, as well as if you are detail-oriented.
Volunteer Team Captains- Highly motivated and organized leaders are needed to take on the role of volunteer captain. As a volunteer captain, you will help recruit volunteers, and on race day you will take the lead for your area by educating, organizing, and managing groups of people to execute the assigned task. Volunteer Booth- Manning the volunteer booth is critical to making our race day volunteers feel welcomed. Your tasks would include volunteer registration, volunteer orientation, and working with the volunteer coordinator and team captains throughout the day. It’s great if you are organized, friendly, and looking for a low-intensity role.
Start/Finish Line Set-up- If you are a start/finish line volunteer, you will help lay cones, hang flags and banners, and set-up tables and tents on the beach.
Hang Signs / Banners- Making sure racers, volunteers, and spectators can find the event on race day is key to a successful event! Signs and banners need to be hung at all entrances, along the bike path and the pier, and on the beach. This role requires a good amount of walking!
Registration- Are you a cool, calm, detail-oriented person who works well under pressure? Registration volunteers will assist with checking-in racers, processing registration payments, assigning race numbers, handing out lunch tickets and goody bags, and informing racers of event logistics.
Pier Greeters- We like to attract all pier visitors to the event festivities on race day. As a pier greeter, you are key to making that happen! Mingling with pier visitors, passing out race day programs, and encouraging people to visit the museum and sponsor booths are key responsibilities of a pier greeters.
Beach Marshals- Do you love the ocean and want to be in the middle of the action?? Beach marshals direct racers to the start line, help set-up cones, pull paddle boards out of water and cheer on the racers. You will likely get wet so wear appropriate clothes!! Great for people who want to be on the sand and in the water, and who are able to carry paddleboards out of the water. (10-20lbs)
Finish Line & Timing - Finish line volunteers are right in the middle of all the action! They assist our timing team, cheer on our finishers, collect timing chips as racers cross the finish line, and help pass out water and fruit. It’s a great role if you want to be on the sand but not get wet, and also if you are friendly, outgoing, and enthusiastic.
Kids Activities- You will be cheering on youth athletes and assisting the activity coordinator with all Juniors Events on the beach. This role is great for people who have experience with kids and teens and who want to be in the middle of the action.
Beer Garden - Volunteers helping to staff the beer garden will help with welcoming customers, keeping the garden tidy, and assisting with beer tickets. This role is great for people who enjoy being around lots of people and good music!
Volunteer Floaters- Are you flexible and friendly? Flexibility is important because we won’t know where you’ll be assigned until race day. You will serve as one of our “reserves” and we will plug you in where we need you based on holes in the volunteer attendance and others needs that arise.
Start/Finish Line Tear-Down - If you are a start/finish line volunteer, you will help clean up cones, take down flags and banners, and tear down tents and tables on the beach. This activity may require some heavy lifting (5-25 lbs).
